More importantly, they're getting a redesign as part of the buyout.

Check out Wikipedia's article on TV Tome to get an idea for what's going to happen. Slick new design, not particularly well integrated with the rest of CNet.

On the other hand, TV Tome's old site was much better than chowhound's current site, so they can go nowhere but up.

I, for one, welcome their new CNet overlords.

Not according to his statement on the main page.

Good for him if it means bringing the software into the 1990s!

Pish, frames, who does like 'em?

Congrats to Chowhound.com then - I like CNET for reviews of tech stuff, why not for reviews of restaurants?

IMHO, CNET is not a commune, so yes, its reasonable to anticipate that an exchange of consideration for intellectual property occurred.

Interestingly, at least right now, there's no mention of this anywhere easily visible at CH. At the top of the Chicago CH forum is a post titled "Big News about Chowhound.com" from the CH team, promising a "momentous announcement". It links to the main chowhound.com page - where no announcements, momentous or otherwise, are found.

I did do some clicky-clicky/linky-linky and didn't really see anything. I can confirm, however, that there are still solicitations to "support" CH (and no doubt C/NET). :)

    Eh?

If you don't see the announcement there, you might need to clear your browser's cache.

And although they still have their store, they have taken down the direct donation appeals from the main page.

Even more interesting. It shows in IE but not in Firefox. FF had its cache blown out weeks ago for a number of reason and I think it's been years since I've visited the main CH page anyway. Oh well, at least I've had the chance to finally read it. Funny that the first paragraph - again - reminds us that the traffic was continuing to result in increased server costs. Like only a bazillion people told Jim it was the ancient s/w dl-ing the entire thread index every page refresh. Well I hope it works out for him/them.

No doubt that C/NET can provide not just new software but even better/faster/stronger lasers to assist them with their focus.

Picking up the Sunday New York Times, I learned that Chowhound.com has been sold to Cnet Networks of San Francisco. The Big Dog remains as manager of the site.

    See http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/26/nyregion/thecity/26chow.html

This got me thinking: if LTH were to be sold, who should be the buyer: Kraft? Pepto-Bismol? The Nation of Dubai? Or (Big) Three Happiness in a hostile takeover?

I think that Chowhound has been sold or somehow become part of CBS Interactive.

I received an e-mail last night from a group that is splitting off from Chowhound to cover the San Francisco - Bay Area asking me to join. I wonder how hard they are working to harvest e-mail addresses from Chowhound as I have not posted on Chowhound in years AND never about the SF Bay area.

Jim Leff (Chowhound co-founder, no longer involved in running it) has been posting on his blog about a Chowhound redesign that seems to have prompted the split. Relevant posts are in the following links:

CBS Interactive is the parent company of both Chow and CNET.
