    Hello LTHers,

I've been lurking for a few weeks now, and want to say upfront how much I enjoy the posts here....and like several others, I live only a couple of blocks from Tagine, though I haven't tried it yet.

My daughter is on her local school's volleyball team, but all matches are played at St. Barts, which is at Addison/Kedvale. Some weekends, she'll have a break between matches, and I'd like to find a good cafe or diner for breakfast or lunch. I know nothing of this area, but I'm hoping one of you does!

    Thanks,

    Elizabeth

You're quite close to Thai Aree at Milwaukee and Addison...not a diner, but a good Thai spot.

Although, come to think of it, I haven't been to or heard any recent reports on Thai Aree in quite some time. If you go, I highly recommend the garlic beef.

    Cheers,

    Aaron

Hi--St. Viator is at Addison/Kedvale; St. Bart's is on Addison just west of Cicero (Lamon?). Which school is your daughter playing at? Based on that, I can give you some suggestions. Anna

The Alps West at Elston and Irving Park Road might be a good choice for you. Nothing outstandingly good (or bad -- an important qualification) about Alps West. Just standard diner fare, comfortable setting, and (the last time I checked) very good milkshakes.

    Hi,

Thanks Anna, yes, it is St Bart's, although I was just at Viator last weekend for basketball, hence the mixup. We can't believe how long it takes to get to either place........

Thanks again all, and keep the suggestions coming......apparently I'll be schlepping out to St Bart's for the next few years, that's where all volleyball games in her league take place.

I've never been to Alps East either, but might be fun.

Sadly, the Alps West is in the process of becoming a Washington Mutual, no more eggs served.

There is a Dapper's in the mall where the Target is on Addison at Sacamento. They served good Greek Diner fare.

The Golden Nugget on Irving and Kildare is good for breakfast, but I wouldn't venture beyond eggs or pancakes.

Is Mr. Steer still open? I liked that place.

Hey, it doesn't take that long to get here--just avoid Irving Park & the Six Corners intersection at all costs during rush hour! My brother lives near Lawrence & Damen, and I can make it to his house in 12 minutes from Keeler/Irving Park.

Sadly, Mr. Steer has bit the dust.

On to food: on Irving Park just west of Cicero: Las Tablas, 4920 W. Irving Park, lunch & dinner; the Mexican place next to it (Artemio's Tacos); new Bosnian restaurant is also on that block.

On Irving Park, near Menard (2 blocks west of Central): Dairy Queen, couple of other places. Irving/Austin--The Burgundy, Greek owned, breakfast, etc.

On Addison: minimall at Addison/Austin, Polish restaurant, Sami Swoi, open for lunch & dinner

On Central, between Addison & up to and south of Belmont: newest incarnation of family restaurant at Roscoe/Central; Central Gyros, just south of Belmont; Grota Polish restaurant, next to Manor Bowl; Puerto Rican restaurant just south of there.

On Belmont: lots of joints between Central & Austin. Also, A&G Market & Oak Mill Bakery retail outlet, if you want to buy something & eat elsewhere. Sorry I don't have the addresses, but if you'll be spending lots of time in this neck of the woods, you'll have time to explore & report back! Anna

Isn't there a bar/grill on Irving that has breakfast at Irving and Kedvale? I remember eating a pretty good corned beef hash while dining at the sidewalk tables in the summertime

That's a shame. Alps East is located on Irving just west of Lincoln/Damen; it's the same food, but maybe a bit too far from the locale you are looking at.

The bar & grill with outdoor seating is McNamara's, Irving Park & Lowell; lunch, dinner most days and brunch only on Sunday's. Anna

    Anna,

I do believe McNamara's now serves traditional Irish breakfast, black and white pudding, Irish bacon, Irish soda bread, beans along with eggs, toast and potatoes, every Saturday and Sunday 10am-2pm.

I've not had their Irish Breakfast, but plan to in the near future.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

Thanks to all for so many suggestions, I noticed Thai Aree driving to yesterday's games, and I'm very interested in McNamara's as well.

Since we needed to shop at Costco, we went to the Cozy Corner Diner at Milwaukee/California, which I found here:
    http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Writeup.aspx?ReviewID=382&RefID=382

Excellent, friendly service, I had a mexican omelette (chorizo, tomato, onion, cheese, salsa served on the side) which was tasty and not greasy, daughter had a burger and fries, husband enjoyed the gypsy skillet. Good hot coffee, decent people watching. Next time, I'll try the pancakes or the club sandwich, both looked very good.

    Thank again everyone!
