decent place for lunch near schuba's?

i'm going to lunch with a friend who's visiting, and she's in lakeview. we had been to southport grocery previously for lunch, and i would prefer not to go back. are there any decent lunch places to go to that are within a short walking distance of schuba's? should i not bother trying to find something new and go to bittersweet? i would appreciate any ideas!!

Pane's Bread Cafe is just a few blocks away. It's a great little bakery/sandwich shop, with some pretty tasty desserts, too.

There is an Indian place on Belmont near Ann Sather that has a great lunch buffet. The name escapes me but it is only a couple of doors down from Ann Sather on the same side of the street.

I'll echo geli's suggestion of Panes; Bittersweet's only disadvantage is its limited selection at a bit of a high price, but if you save some room, it might be a dessert option. (They used to sell baggies of "mistakes" -- chunks of their baked goods that had broken -- for a couple bucks, a great bargain. But there's always something good worth buying intact.) And just because you're using Schuba's as a point of reference, if you're in the mood for bar food, the Harmony Grill isn't bad. I can vouch for the burger, which they'll make a genuine rare.

There is a little Mexican place across the street from Shubas. Not sure of the name but the sign proclaims The Best Enchiladas. Don't go there. They lied.

Sinbad's is a Middle Eastern establishment.

I believe that the poster is instead talking about Standard India.

The last time I was in Standard India, c. 2002, I swore it would be the last time.

Moti Mahal and the other place right on Sheffield are slightly better, but even living 5 minutes away, I never go to those places when I've got an Indian food jones. The extra drive to Devon is soooo worth it.

There's a Taqueria el Milagro which is pretty good, though the best Mexican in the immediate area is Dona Torta/Tortas USA, subject of an absolutely brilliant Reader review here.

Forgive me for asking a dumb question but... is Schuba's open for lunch?

the Harmony Grill is indeed open for lunch. Can't get much closer than that.

FlatTop Grill is also quite close; right across the street from Schuba's. I really enjoy Bittersweet's lunches; their homemade soups are terrific, as are their sweet treats. The only issue I have nearly everytime I go there is that the service can be really incredibly slow and sometimes the waitstaff is clueless. I will echo the sentiment to skip the Mexican place with the pink decor. It's beyond horrid.

Probably coser than Bittersweet are, in no particular order, Wishbone, Tapatio(s), Mystic Celt (Irish breakfast), Coobah, SoPo, Schoolyard, Southport Lanes, Justin's and other not-great, but not bad options for a burger or a modest lunch. If you walk up to Addison, the options expand. E.g., Meinl has been packing them in lately and the food is not bad.

I third the recommendation for Panes. I used to live up Wellington and would go there quite frequently, even when I moved down to Old Town. It is a FANTASTIC bargain and the food is really really good. There's a salad with farmer's cheese that I really enjoyed and a goat cheese-marinara appetizer that's good too.

I need to go back!
