The owner of Wiener take all, Drew Olbur, is an old friend of mine. He was a frat brother of my own blood brother back in the next 70s/early 80s in Champaign. An absolute sports fanatic, this guy was meant to be a hot dog maven. Putting up sports pictures and memorabilia all over the walls, like so many other hot dog places, makes perfect sense if you know him. He’s a real hot dog owner kinda guy.
I just got off the phone with Drew to ask him about this high-sounding “Vienna Beef Hall of Fame award” and what it really means. Right off the bat, you could tell that he was hugely proud to be recognized by the people over at Vienna Beef. It was obvious that this award means a lot to him, especially since he was selected as one of their initial inductees. According to Drew, he was awarded this honor largely based on 2 criteria; the loyal use of Vienna beef products and his longstanding philanthropic commitments to the community of Buffalo Grove.
Over its 20+ year existence, I’ve only been to Wiener Take All a handful of times. Virtually the only time I can voluntarily get myself to go out that way is to visit another frat brother of Olbur’s…..my accountant. Making the drive to Buffalo Grove is about on the same par as having wisdom teeth removed. The light at the end of the tunnel, though, is knowing that after I finish figuring out how much taxes I owe our beloved government, Wiener Take All and its dog and fries awaits me.
Wiener Take All uses an 8:1 natural casing Vienna Beef hotdog along with a poppy seed bun. His fries are hand cut, twice fried. For all the suburban mommies out there, he’s proud to say that the tuna is made fresh daily.
