Provenance Open In Logan Square

The small, but rapidly growing restaurant area of Logan Square at California and Logan Boulevard now includes an upscale deli, Provenance.

An initla visit showed the place to have great promise with an interesting seleciton of wines and upscale food offerings (truffle butter, sea salt, sauces). They are also planning on doing regular wine tastings and food tastings.

Anyone in the area who stops at the nearby Starbucks for their latte should take a few mintues and look at what this intriguing place as to offer.

They also said they would have fresh bread daily (from Red Hen I think). Welcome news to me as crusty bread has been difficult to find in this neighborhood.

I wish they had more quality grocery items, as opposed to say fancy salts, which I would conjecture people might just as likely buy from other places. The real niche I think they could fill is to provide a convenient place to buy (for lack of a better descriptor) gourmet grocery items in the area.

Provenance has finally opened, after a long permit dance with the city of Chicago. The shop features a small, well-priced ($10-$25, per their press release) selection of wines, Red Hen breads, fancy foods, and a number of locally-produced gourmet products, like Gary Poppins Popcorn (Evanston) and Terrapin Ridge sauces packed in squeeze bottles. There's a small cooler for cheeses, yogurt, and meats, and a freezer with Ciao Bella gelato. Tracy Kellner, the owner, is a resident of Logan Square, and has opened up the shop to fill a void in the neighborhood. I'm happy because Provenance is on my route home from work.

I finally made it into Provenance today. I agree that it would be better if they had more food items, but 'm glad it's here. The wines are particularly exciting in this neighborhood, where exactly nobody else sells anything more interesting than what you'll find at Osco. And the owners understand and clearly enjoy what they are selling (e.g., I was given a cogent, comprehensible, as far as I can see from Google correct explanation of biodynamic viticulture). Again, Provenance is not Sam's, or even one of the smaller specialty stores in a more fashionable neighborhood. Hell, even Trader Joe's has probably 10 times the cheese varieties. But it's a fun place, and I look forward to watching it grow with the neighborhood. (Small as it is, there's plenty of room for more shelves.)

They're trying to get the alderman to persuade the new owner to give them until the end of the year, at least.

Provenance Food and Wine's Logan Square location will close Sept. 27, according to an announcement Wednesday by the retail grocery & wine shop owners.

That is too bad . . . makes me feel even more fortunate having them near me in Lincoln Square. A bit of a hodge podge in terms of what they sell, but certainly great quality stuff and terrific service.
