Trojan Virus on Erik M's Slipaahaan?!?!

What gives? Clicked on the link to go to Erik's Slipaahaan (sp?) website and my virus scanner kicks in immediately saying a Trojan had been found, clean failed, quarantine failed then access denied and everything closed.

If this is just coincidental, I apologize for the mad face.

Erik needs to check out this page.

His website's (likely through no fault of Erik's) infected w/ code that puts PWSteal.Trojan on your computer - googling revealed on Symantec's site that it's a password stealing program. Ugh... I don't know if it's on my computer now and wreaking havoc...

Erik M - no sweat, my good man; What a bum to infect your very excellent resource (as you know, I was about to check it out again for some nice menu translations and pics). Anyone who's been on the site recently should probably follow the rec's on Symantec's website, scan their computer and check the registries.

Thanks to gleam, I think that the problem has been rectified.

For those who don't already have anti-spyware and anti-virus software, especially if you've visited Erik's site in the past week, you should get some:

Ad-Aware SE Personal

Spybot Search&Destroy

avast! 4 Home Edition


All of these are 100% free for personal use and do a very good job of passively and actively watching out for spyware and viruses.

This is another good opportunity to remind people to switch to Firefox, which is not nearly as vulnerable to spyware as Windows.

There are so many nasty worms etc., out there, I have almost given up, except for one piece of software.

Go Back 3.0 is fantastic. I have been running some version of Go Back for years, and it has saved me more times than I can remember. If you have a problem, screwed up a new software install, or what ever, you just click on GoBack, and you will see times, and dates listed. you click on that time/date, and the computer will go back to that time/date. You will lose everything on your computer from that time forward, including the nasty stuff.

One note, be sure to find version 3.0, because the new 4.0 is not good at all, and has caused a lot of problems. 3.0, if you can find it, sells for about $30.00 and is so worth it.

PS: Microsoft licenses a version of GoBack, and they call it System Restore, but no where near as good as GoBack 3.0

Macs are relatively free of spyware, trojans, worms, viruses, etc right now because of two major factors: Too few users are running on macs to make it worth it, and most malware authors are used to writing for x86 CPUs.

The intel macs and the osx86 project make it much more likely that people will start to crank out malware for these systems.

Yes, osx has a much better security subsystem, and it ships with most services off, but things like the launchd exploit and assorted other security updates show that it's only a matter of time.

I love macs. I'm a linux geek who switched to OSX for his desktop machines, and I'm a zealot when it comes to converting others. But I know my system isn't bulletproof.

At the moment, Macs are attacked very rarely. That can quickly and easily change.

Oh...I know it's just a matter of time. And...there will always be assholes.

If you're delinquent about updating patches and if you don't have the appropriate virus detection software, is it possible to get a virus or spyware simply from visiting a site (without downloading or doing some thing explicit other than visiting a site)?

Yep, they take advantage of bugs in internet explorer or other applications to silently install software on your machine without you ever knowing.

Yes as evidenced by what recently happened; Just clicked the link for the website and "voila!" instantly downloaded the virus upon loading the page.
