Let's face it, even when you get them at 80% off, they aren't worth it.
Last night's dinner at La Majada in Oak Park can be entered into evidence as exhibit A. I have very fond memories of La Majada, but the meal was pretty much a Tex Mex garbage fest. The salsa was good. That's it. Like, the chips were stale. That's what I mean when I say the salsa was good... JUST the salsa. Prices were horrendous. Just horrendous.
One tamale: 2.95
Burritos here start at around 10.00, and no, NOT the "big as your head size" more of like a medium burrito size tortilla was used. However, you DO get super salty rice and beans on the plate as well...YAAAY!
Enchiladas: 11.95
I used to REALLY like their enchiladas, and I mean I would RECOMMEND them. No more. My mole was grainy, even had multiple tiny things that reminded me of sticks - possibly chile pod stems, maybe cinnamon stick remnants, I dunno. I was picking them out of my mouth far too many times.
Wife 1.0 and I agreed that while we both wanted to enjoy our meal, that was the last time we'd go there even with the nostalgia factor and all. Don't wanna tarnish the good memories any further.
Definite "nay" - the Cert was a 25 off of 35, and we got it at 80% off. It cost like 2 bux or something like that. Not worth it.
Inari SushiDefinitely some hits and misses here, but in the end, I'd get another Cert at 80% off. (Actually, I already did.)
That cucmber salad, however, was just gross. There is NO WAY that could be the standard presentation.
Moderate "Yay" - next time, I'm going to stick with sushi
Friendship ChineseIf you are in this area, and must have Chinese food but don't want to travel, then, I guess I could see the draw. Other than that, I really don't see the draw. The space is nice, interesting, but the food, while it may be the best in the
immediate area is just not my cup of tea. I lived about two blocks away from this place for about 5 years, and went there three times. The 2nd and 3rd times were us giving them another chance to support the fanfare. I just don't get it. We went back a few months ago, and again, it was just ok for the prices. You could do ok if you order correctly to max out the value of your cert.
Moderate "Yay" - I'd go back if someone could not be talked out of it, or ONLY with the certificate if I was paying.
Al's Pizza in Cicero (over by dere)
In a heartbeat. Old school. Red sauce. Eggplant or Veal Parm. Done. In a heartbeat. Pretty sure SteveZ digs the parms here, and props to him for pointing me (and others) in Al's direction.
Big "Yay" from me considering price points and food quality. Not destination worthy, but if you're in the area you could do waaaaay worse (and I have.) The place is a carpeted dive also. OLD, old school.
Viceroy Of India (in Lombard)
Go 3/4 of the way down
this thread to see my thoughts. IMO, this place is a joke.
I bought one for Harmony Chinese on Archer - not expecting much, and also for Jim & Pete's on North Avenue in Elmwood Park which gets some love for ther pizza and red sauce food. So far, restaurant.com certs are pretty decent for mid week meals out without breaking the bank. Also get to try a new place without getting pist if the food is sub par for the price, or maybe revisiting an old standby. I'm sure there are others out there who use these things - care to share any experiences? I promise I wont buy them up at full site price - I'll only wait until they go 80 off, so if they are really good, they'll prolly be gone before I can get them.
We cannot be friends if you do not know the difference between Mayo and Miracle Whip.
