Here's a list of traditional west Door County food stops that have fed our family for years:

    1. Perry's Cherry Diner/Sturgeon Bay- 50's Burger & malt joint in the heart of ship building territory. www.perrycherrydiner.com

    2. Pelliter's & The White Gull Inn/Fish Creek-Tradition Door County fish boils. White Gull Inn serves excellent breakfasts, Door County cherry stuffed French toast and cherry pancakes are excellent. Reservations for the fish boils are required. www.whitegullinn.com

    3. Bayside Tavern/Fish Creek-Good burgers and crunchy broccoli salads.

    4. Wilson's Restaurant/Ephriam-An old time ice cream parlor.

    5. Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant/Sister Bay-No trip to Door County is complete without a breakfast of Swedish pancakes with lingonberries. Goats grazing on the roof are optional.

    6. Wagon Trail Resort/Ellison Bay-Grandma's Swedish Bakery & Rowley's Bay Restaurant(serving overstuffed breakfast buffets). www.wagontrailresort.com

    7. Charlie's Smokehouse/Gills Rock-Great little fish store offering the finest smoked salmon, trout, chubs, and white fish. Bring a cooler. http://www.charliessmokehouse.com

While many restaurants dot the Door, these are CSD's family favorites.

    Enjoy.

There are several good posts on Door County. You might want to try the Search function and see what you come up with, but here are a few links...

We've rented houses up there quite a few times and my own recent hits and misses are included in one of those links. My in-laws go up there every fall and always make it a point to have dinner at the Mission Grille in Sister Bay. I was sorry that we didn't go there our last time up. Next time for sure.

Not a restaurant, but my family never left Door County without stopping for some "ho-made" pickles and jams from Bea's "Ho-Made" Products.

Not sure if it's just nostalgia, but I remember them to be pretty tasty.

We live close enough to drive over for the day. I like Double Delites in Egg Harbor for a quick snack. They have really good Gelato and a decent assorment of popcorn. If you are looking for a really nice place we like the Inn at Kristofer's, Sister Bay. The menu changes all the time. It has excellent food and service. Save room for dessert! I also like Mission Grille in Sister Bay for lunch. We usually avoid the high tourist months, so they can usually seat us outside. It is wonderful to eat lunch under the trees. We have never had dinner at Mission Grille but I do like their lunches.

I have to second the recommendation for Bea's products. Her "Hot" Garlic Dill Pickles are near and dear to my heart. They have the taste and texture of a very good kosher dill, with the added bonus of being cured with red pepper flakes. If you can't make the drive all the way to Door County, Bea's products are available at a few places just across the border on the way to Milwaukee.

After trying several times to order a "normal" old-fashioned in Door County, I have decided it is chauvinistic to try to order food as you would in Chicago. So I just order bourbon (yeah, I know brandy would be more appropriate) old-fashioneds and when they ask "sweet or sour?," I reply sour, but with just a little "Squirt." Sometimes they even come out good.

I've decided food is the same; its almost exclusively supper clubs from now on-eat where the locals eat. Specifically Sister Bay Bowl and Supper Club is my favorite. Given when you're going, you may have the opportunity to bowl quite a few games. But this past weekend was excellent-no wait, good old-fashioned, and I'm sure all the food is good, even though I almost always have perch or walleye, both terrific.
Both the Mill and Greenwood are also good-goods stories, predictably good food, little surprises (duck at the Mill), staff and clientele that know each other, very comfortable.

It was at the Mill that I made my old-fashioned revelation. Trying to be someone who had it figured out, I ordered an old-fashioned with no soda. Waitress says no problem, the bartender is knowledgeable and accommodating. Unfortunately he used sletzer instead. He graciously made another for me and once he reached the apropriate step, I told him stop, that's it. Afterwards I realized that that process cannot be entered into without sounding like a flatlander smartass. I may just switch to martinis.
