Salumi in Seattle - NYT Article

This article ran today in the NYT about the store owned by Armandino Batali, father of Mario. The culatello had me salivating, but the best part of the article for me was a quote by Sr. Batali as he greeted the author and friends... "Fat is beautiful. Fat is our friend". Ironically, several weeks ago my 4 year old said something strikingly similar as he was gnawing the 'white part' (as he calls it) off the bacon he had for breakfast. As he was chewing on the bacon, he said, 'Fat is so good. We love fat.' We thought it would make a very good motto for our family crest. Since we have family in Seattle, we'll be looking for a delivery of culatelli in the very near future.

Has anyone here ever ordered from Salumi via mail order? I was checking out their website and saw that all of their products are available by pound via mail order. I was thinking of getting my Dad a small culatello for Father's Day...

Any experiences?

Can you direct me to where you're seeing their culatello available for mail order for home purchase? I went to salumicuredmeats.com and am seeing only the salami duo for sale to retail customers.

John--I feel like an online newbie. I was so excited to see the all the cured meats that I didn't notice that i needed to be a specialty shop or a restaurant to take advantage of the mail order process.

Wow, Salumi just changed their order process. Up until last week, individuals could order any of their products. The online menu for mail orders was not divided as it is now. In fact, last week I received my order of 2 small mole and 2 small salumi salami via DHL. Looks like I got the order in just in time. (I may have been lucky because my order coincided with their "Duo" offering.)

I assume the change came from increased demand. Salumi's mail order service was featured in Food & Wine magazine last year in an article on mail order food gifts (can't remember if it was Nov or Dec issue). I tried phoning to place an order in December and was told they were sold out and to try back after the first of the year. Calls in January and February got the same "sold out" response. I remembered to try back two weeks ago and was finally successful.

can you order to have it sent home if you are there in person?

I just placed an order today for:

1 Hot Sopressata
1 Oregano
1 Finocchiona

Each is approximately 12in long and 1-1.5 lbs. Cost is 17dollars a pound. The first available ship date is October 21st.

I will update about the overall experience then with pictures.

I'm a big fan of Salumi. My wife and I ordered a bunch of stuff to be served at our wedding. We had the salumi shipped directly to our caterer. The folks at Salumi were incredibly helpful.

Last time I visited, you could you buy plates of Salumi's salumi at Juicy Wine Company.

Anthony Bourdain had a great piece on Salumi in his Pacific Northwest show. You can find part 1 here and part 2 here. You'll have to fast forward thru the geoduck clam segment to get right to it, but that's facinating enough so just watch it all!
