Has anyone ever tried Select Cut Steakhouse, at the Diversey & Halsted intersection? The menu looks reasonably priced and a coworker raves about it.

I've been there a couple of times. It's pretty good, obviously not as good as the top tier steakhouses in town, but good for the neighborhood. The fun part about the restaurant is that you can "add ounces" to the steaks on the menu, fun if you're feeling particularly carnivorous when you're there. They also, allegedly, have one of the Top 5 burgers in the City (according to the Trib), but I've never tried one so I won't comment.

Bottom line: It's nowhere I'm rushing to get back to, but if one of the guys suggests it for dinner I wouldn't veto the idea.

There is one other place I should mention in this area. I suppose that I've lived across the street from this restaurant for so long that it has become invisible to me, but we still take out from there with some regularity. It's a favorite with my kids and we even have some friends who used to live in the neighborhood ( now in the suburbs) who want to eat there whenever they visit...PS Bangkok (2500 N.Clark). Certainly americanized Thai food. Things tend to be overly sweet...but dishes like "crispy" pad siew (I know...I know) and their pad thai are usually well liked. Yum type salads (green papaya and egg especially) and grilled chicken can be good too. Better than most around here.

Wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions. Some of them are useful--just the kind of thoughts I was looking for.

Rest of post deleted by me because of fresh info coming in over "the wire"--aka, the "Granny's Pancake House" thread.

I picked up burgers from Select Cut to bring down to my parents boat at Diversey Harbor and I think it was the best burger I have ever had. I wish I had taken pics! It is chopped steak and you can taste that it is. I am 9 months pregnant so I ordered it well done figuring it would not be as good as everybody's medium well burgers. I was wrong. It was a half pound of heaven. Very juicy with a great flavor. A pure meat flavor. All of the garnish is on the side. I ordered mine with American cheese, but my parents got theirs with cheddar. It also came with a huge bag of steak fries. They got a bit soggy on the drive, but were still edible.

All in all a great meal for 8$. I would recommend it!

Always enjoy a trip to la creperie when I go see a movie at this theater. The ham and swiss crepe is simple and delicious!

You also get a free dessert crepe if you show them your movie stub. Or email nowadays.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned mfk., the Spanish seafood restaurant, under the helm of the winner of the 2019 Jean Banchet Rising Chef of the Year Award. It's really really good. (It's also really small, so make your reservations in advance.)
