    Hi

We're visiting the in-laws, who live just east of Topanga State Park (if you look it up on Google Maps you'll see a white area just next to it, they are in there - their street makes a T with Sunset Blvd). We are looking for a nice, but not wildly expensive, restaurant to take them to. I was thinking AOC or Hungry Cat, but they seem so far away from there, especialy on a Saturday night (isn't Sunset pretty busy?)

So if you can recommend a place in that sort of vein that's on the west side, I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Leek

Topanga Canyon--the road--has a few interesting places to eat, but it's the backdrop of the Canyon that makes them stunning. Nice, un-urban vibe. Froggy's Fish Market for dinner if you're into fish (though I've never eaten there and can't vouch for it personally...anyone else care to weigh in?) If you want a very L.A., new-agey food experience (tonight's free range chicken was hatched under the loving care of a hen named Rita at a ranch in Sonoma...) the Inn of the Seventh Ray is a beautiful place to eat. Outdoor seating in a sweet little garden. For Mexican, Abuelita's is the place. For breakfast/pastry/coffee, Mimosa Cafe.

    Abuelita's

The decision is to go to The Hump to have sushi and watch sunset and the airplanes.

(it's inside the Santa Monica Airport)

The fog was bad, so we could barely see the ocean, but the Omakase dinner at The Hump was fantastic. $175 per person including tip and tax (and no alcohol). Highlights were fresh, raw (not par-cooked) octopus, very very very finely sliced sashimi, something with squid and some sort of seaweed we'd never had before, a tiny whole hard crab - flash fried, miso cod. I didn't like squid with bonito intestines (too livery for me).

I've eaten at Typhoon, but not The Hump. We wanted to try their Thai stir-fried crickets, but they were sold out so we settled for the white sea worms. They tasted much like you would think fish food flakes would taste. The rest of the meal was good, although it was three or four years ago so I don't know exactly what I had. I did tell our waitress to kick the spices up and they delivered.
When I grow up, I'm going to Bovine University!
