I live at University Village, looking for some good Indian food. I used to work in Schaumburg so have been to plenty of those wonderful places for awesome cheap eats. Any places like that here in the city? I have been craving for some tandori chicken and curry with chicken and green peas and all that good stuff. Any help would be awesome thanks foodies!

As far as downtown-ish Indian, I'd suggest Klay Oven or Gaylord. I haven't been to either in a very long time, so I can't vouch for them, but they're the only 2 that I am familiar with..

If you're in University Village, you could take the red line up to Grand and go to Indian Garden in Streeterville. The menu is vast, and they have a number of unusual items, too.

    Indian Garden
    247 E. Ontario St. (2nd Floor)

    Phone: (312) 280-4910 Fax: (312) 280-4934
    Hours: Lunch: 11am-2:30pm; Dinner 5:00pm-10:00pm

Sorry I can't think of anything closer.

I work fairly close to Klay Oven, so we get lunch there once in a while. They have a decent buffet, but it has lost its charm since we started going to India House, whose lunch buffet is not only larger, but fresher and generally better.

Both of these places aspire to a bit more fanciness than most of the places I prefer to go on Devon. (i.e. not exactly cheap eats) I remember being pretty impressed ordering dinner off the menu at KO but it's been 3-4 years and I don't recall the details very well. I haven't been to Gaylord in a while, but it was not disappointing, if not life changing, several years ago. (They also have a lunch buffet.)

There are also a number of hole-in-the-wall cabbie places (Zaiqa, Baba Palace, and I'm sure more I don't know), if you are game for a little more adventure (and cheaper prices). These places usually have just one or two things that they serve each day; your choice will probably be something like "vegetarian or non-vegetarian". These places are really more about providing a community for the patrons than about providing fine dining. I went to Zaiqa a few years ago and was not terribly impressed, but I have a friend who also works around here who was a devoted regular for a while. Some friends took me to one south of the river (and thus a little closer to University Village) which might have been called La Vosh, but I can't recall the details.

If it's West Loop tandoori chicken that you want, you're in luck.

Kabob Corner serves it as well as a halfway decent chicken boti and biryani.

It's not the best in the city by far, but it's a pretty good option for that area.

    Kabob Corner
    760 W Jackson Blvd
    312-906-9885

    Best,

It's not entirely accurate that the cabbie places only serve one or two things a day. They typically have several more dishes than that, though it is true that you will be limited to whatever they are cooking that day. I frequently stop to pick up food at Baba's on the way home. Nice chili chicken and parathas.

PS, I actually enjoy the "Middle Eastern" stuff at Kabob Corner more than the Indo-Pak offerings.

Yes, plus at Kabbabish, my favorite, possibly the best dish, the fish tacos, I mean fried fish, is not even on display.

I'll second the suggestion for Baba's Palace. Cheap and good all the time, but especially after a late night at the bar.

Larosh used to be under the L at 209 W Lake but it’s been closed for a couple years now. I thought Kababish, Baba’s and others were much better but I suppose it wasn’t a bad place for the Loop.

Couldn't find a better thread for this- did Kabob Corner close? I live near it and walked over there to try it one evening a few weeks ago. It was locked up and had paper covering the windows.
