The Chopping Block in Lincoln Square (Lincoln and Lawrence) is having their sidewalk sale....so is all of Lincoln Square during Square Daze, or some such foolish name for the festival.

Anyway...I hate them. I told several of the clerks that I hate them also. I hate Chopping Block because I can't go in there and only buy one thing. They always have a few neat things, not that I could use...but just neat to have in a disgusting consumerism kind of way.

I finally bought Breath of a Wok, which they had on sale for $21 (still cheaper than Amazon). I also picked up a box of long pepper...I won't ever use it, but because I have read about it in so many historical food books...I thought I needed it. Are you beginning to understand my hatred.

Oh, they have lots of neat stuff. Plan to only spend a few minutes. Your wallet will thank me.

    peter,
I've been in there a few times, and have yet to be tempted by any of the paraphernalia, however, the staff seemed nice (as you apparently deduced). I understand that they also have a really cool kitchen space upstairs that is available to rent. I'm wondering if you or anyone else on the board has been to any of the classes or themed events they offer.
Man : I can't understand how a poet like you can eat that stuff.
    T. S. Eliot: Ah, but you're not a poet.

I know the feeling all too well. I was in there buying San Marzano tomatoes and one of the girls asked me if I'd like to try some Truffle & Salt. Having spent twenty-something dollars on this concoction, I wish I never knew how good it tasted!

I went to a "date night" hands-on class there last summer and it was fun. The kitchen was very well equipped. The recipes were *good* but not great since they have to appeal to an LCD kinda set. Skill-specific classes are probably a better bet.
