The Oak Park Bakery is justifiably proud of their butter coffee cakes. Today and tomorrow (July 15 & 16) they're having a pre-vacation sale: buy one at the regular price and get a second a half price. Since the coffee cakes are mostly priced in the $5-6 range, this is quite a bargain.

They're famous for their fresh strawberry, but the other flavors are great too. I can personally speak to the cheese, blueberry cheese, pecan, prune, and raspberry. But note that by 9 a.m. this morning they were already out of cheese and raspberry!

(Not sure of the hours but they open very early--before 7 I think).

    Mmmmm, trans fats.

edit: I should mention that their coffee cakes are indeed very good. I just have memories of seeing empty jugs of shortening in their dumpster growing up. Lots of them. Just imagine how great the stuff would be with real butter...

It seems unlikely they can get away with selling "butter coffeecakes" with no butter in them. Especially not if they taste good.

Presumably the bakery makes other things besides coffeecake that use the shortening. Do they sell iced cakes? Pies? Have you checked to see whether they have switched to a transfat-free shortening?

As I said, I saw them growing up. I haven't eaten anything from OP Bakery in the past few years, nor have I been hanging out in the alley near their dumpsters.

I'm sure they were probably using a mixture of shortening and butter, or even pure butter in some pastries.
