Trading local "hidden gem" secrets one evening with the great bartender at Archo De Cuchilleros (sp?) on Halsted yielded a very surprising revelation...that is, he swore the absolute best ribs in Chicago can be found............at Fernando's Mexican Restuarant on Lincoln...

Now, I'd been past the place many times, and somehow it just didn't seem that appealing for standard Mexican....but ribs? Who would have guessed?

Since our friend at Archo nailed many of our other faves, we clearly had respect for his recommendation. The bottom line is, finally tried them this weekend......fantastic! Made with a chipolte barbecue sauce, just the right amount of spice...and exactly as tender (not too) as we love them....man and woman seated at bar next to us just had to try a bite..and promptly swooned and ordered their own rack

You just never know where or when you'll stumble upon these little surprises....

I have been a fan of Fernando's for almost 20 years. We are always treated well, I think the most of their dishes are good. I have always been a fan of their carne asada(skirt steak). Since they have changed somewhat with the n'hood, & are now Fernando's Tequila Bar, they're not exactly the same anymore. One menu item I dearly miss is their sopa de ajo. A simple hearty chicken broth chock full of minced garlic. Simple, stinky, & will kill anything that might be ailing you.

I love Fernando's and finally tried the ribs a few weeks ago. They were delicious--similar in texture to the Twin Anchors boiled/baked variety but with a sweet and spicy chipotle sauce. They also have a very good fried shrimp dish--the shrimp are coated with a tempura-like batter containing cilantro. The roberto burrito with adobo pork is also excellent. And of course, there are the extremely strong, tasty margaritas. If you're lucky enough to get Manuel as your server, you'll be well taken care of.
