Hi everyone, I am new to the forum. Since I am an ice cream addict, I just wanted everyone to know that there is an Oberweis ice cream shop in Chicago. I love their malts, yummmm! The Oberweis glass-bottled milk and ice cream is sooooo good. I don't know why they taste so good; my theory is that they basically make the stuff like the old days (i.e., the natural way). The location is 1293 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, 773-276-9006. Go and check it out!

Welcome to LTH Forum. Like most other types of food, ice cream gets quite a bit of discussion and tasting around here. You've got an interesting poll, but it is missing many of the hand crraftred ice creams in town that have been discussed in detail. Check out this thread, for example. You might want to think about updating the choices in your poll or at least adding "none of the above" as a choice.

P.S. Oberweiss Vanilla is a guilty pleasure of mine, though I can't say it's my "go to" ice cream given a choice.

Good point Steve about the "none of them above" choice, but I can no longer edit the poll (see below). I knew there were more choices, but I thought I better cut it down to just five that most people knew about. And thanks for the thread, there are some new places on that list for me to visit. I too love Oberweis's vanilla ice cream, as well. Oberweis sells a Long Grove apple pie, and it is fantastic with the vanilla ice cream. Or the mini apple pie from RedHen in Wicker Park goes perfect with the vanilla ice cream.

"How do I edit or delete a poll?
As with posts, polls can only be edited by the original poster, a moderator, or board administrator. To edit a poll, click the first post in the topic, which always has the poll associated with it. If no one has cast a vote then users can delete the poll or edit any poll option. However, if people have already placed votes only moderators or administrators can edit or delete it; this is to prevent people rigging polls by changing options mid-way through a poll."

There's an Oberweis within walking distance of my house, which is a verrry dangerous thing. :-)

I'm not really a fan of Cold Stone-- too expensive for what you get.

I too declined to answer the poll, since this week my favorite is Capannari's in Mt Prospect. Yum.

Mark me down as a Chocolate Shoppe fan -- their ice cream is at their own outpost on the Northwest Side and the local Sweet Occasions chain, perhaps among other places. For frozen custard, I'm happy with Scooter's.

Another Capannari's fan. I recently had a "flight" of four flavors: lingonberry sorbet, chocolate sorbet, pomegranate and matcha. (The last 2 were ice cream; I thought the pomegranate was going to be sorbet.) It's a manageable serving in a small banana split bowl.

My SO says the chocolate is the best he's tasted in this area.

Oberweis is OK; I hate the very idea of Cold Stone. Most Ben and Jerry's is too gummy for me. Haagen-Dazs is better at that level. I generally prefer my ice cream without chunks of stuff.

Sorry about the poll everyone! I didn't think about it until Steve was nice enough to mention it. Forgive the newbie

I've been eating a lot less 'scream than I used to, not sure why exactly, but I haven't been enjoying it as much as I used to.

The most memorable ice cream for me in the last few years was at Mario Battali's Babbo in NYC: a tiny scoop of bergamot ice cream with bittersweet chocolate. I'd gladly accept that as my final meal: bitter, sweet and intensely flavored.

I used to be a big fan of Bryer's, when they were all natural, all the time. Today, they're more about the mix-ins, and even what was my fave, the mint chocolate chip, just doesn't have the same clean mint + cream taste it used to.

Ice cream shops? Just doesn't happen often.
    Hmm.. Kopps. Yup, Kopps.

Looks like Oberweis is winning so far, at least out of the choices that were given. I need more feedback for another hard choice. Okay, I am going to Oberweis this weekend (again). I can't decide between a chocolate peanut butter banana shake or an old fashion chocolate malt. Any opinion on this one.

For me, I haven't had Oberweis for a while for reasons totally separate from the quality of their ice cream...

Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't have a single favorite place currently. Margie's is great for the non-ADA compliant, Beatles-ate-there interior (but not so much the service or the ice cream itself - no complaints, it's just not 'great'). Also, I like Marble Slab a lot more than Cold Stone, but they seem to have lost the marketing death match around here for the 'smooshed ice cream mix in' slice of the market.
