Over on Shopping and Cooking there was a discussion of things that we food fiends manage to kill off at supermarkets.

MrsF and I seem to have the same affect on Family Restaurants.
When our kids were very young, the nearby Baker's Square was a regular -- at least once a month -- place to eat. Quick service, free crayons, pie, and some really good, inexpensive items on the menu such as their Parmesan burger (at that time Parmesan was one of their signature ingredients -- salad dressing, burger, sandwiches, etc.), a mexican pizza (now shameful to even think about): all gone. We stopped going there. We hit the one near Randhurst only when we don't want to travel more than 10 minutes and we can't think of anything else.

TGIFriday's? We haven't eaten there in three years. Every item our family ate there has been either deleted, or turned into something unlike its original version. Not interested.

Max & Erma's? Guacamole burger? Gone. Onion strings? Gone.

Is it that we don't eat there often enough, or are our tastes that far beyond the middle of the road that our opinions matter not a whit?

At least it's giving me more reasons to hit the small -- often ethnic -- eateries in the area. Long live Monica's Mexican Food, Giacomos, China North, etc.
What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?

This happens at the small ethnic places too. Last nite we were at Usmania and I found that a fried chicken dish (kind of like the broasted chicken at Kahns) had been deleted. I liked it. And, as long as wer'e complaining about deleting fried chicken...the most agregious recent example has to be Barcellos. They had the best take out chicken on the north side (tho Leons is good if you get it freshly made). When Barcellos was sold to the Sweets & Savories people, they discontinued it entirely. Too bad.

I blame Paul the Waiter.

Speaking of Mt. Prospect, Photo's no longer has fried chicken-- or meatball subs! That fried (aka "broasted") chicken used to be my dog's favorite.
