Plymouth Restaurant Bar and Grill now open

Went to lunch Sat, which is when they opened. it's in the old Binyon's space on Plymouth court, just south of Jackson and is open 24/7!! Very nice upscale diner space. Counter, Booths and Tables. Pictures of old Chicago on walls. Normal diner food, but the mexican breakfast dishes--chilaquiles and chorizo looked interesting. they did not have the two dishes i was interested in--the chlle rellenos and the stuffed pork loin. The lovely Donna gave us, the only four customers in the restaurant, the guided tour. The Bar in the lower level is sweet, i hate that word but it is pretty, and i saw urdinger oktoberfest, fuller's pride, and goose on tap. Food comes down the dumbwaiter fron the kitchen directly above. Even sweeter, sweetest, is the rooftop. another bar and 17 tables overlooks the L, Wabash and Van Buren streets. The rooftop bar at Plymouth is open at last and I think it has immediately become one of the great drinking spaces in the city. It's all about the view, with the Harold Washington Library, Van Buren El, Old Colony Building and Fisher Building providing a spectacular backdrop. You can even peer through the kitchen windows of the Standard Club. Four beers are on tap: Erdinger Octoberfest Weiss, Goose Island, Grolsch, and another I can't remember. With the current warmer weather, this might be a perfect time to slip out of work a little early and enjoy a cold beverage. They have been keeping irregular hours, partly because of changing weather, so it would be wise to call ahead and check if the roof is open.

How are the beer prices?

I'ma try to stop by mid-afternoon tomorrow. The Old Colony is my favorite building in the loop - looking forward to the view.

A half liter of Erdinger was $5.75 but I don’t know about other beers or mixed drinks. Be sure to check ahead if the rooftop is open. It might open at 4 (or not at all if rainy). I don’t think they have a regular schedule yet.

I don't suppose there's any turtle soup on the menu....

i was told by a famous chicago food critic to never give a bad review. So, i'll just say that the Urdinger and Goose beers were good. Pork chop and eggs were ok for a 3 am breakfast.

so as not to confuse anyone I am NOT the Lovely Donna giving tours of this new diner! Evil Ronnie and I haven't even been there yet.

but, everyone should stop across the street for some great soup!

A nice friday afternoon at the Plymouth, two Blue Moons (in a plastic mug, interestingly) and a turkey burger with jack cheese and chips. How was the food? Average. Enjoying an early escape from work on a holiday weekend, overlooking the big bad city from a strangely tropical bar? Pretty awesome.

They are not open 24/7 any more... They close at 11 most nights, maybe later on the weekend.

I've been to the Plymouth quite a few times now and I've got to say that all it has going for it is the unique view from the rooftop.

The beer on tap is not very interesting and the cups are always plastic. The selection of non-beer booze is paltry (again, served in plastic). The food has a distinct Sysco-cafeteria quality about it.

And forget about it in the non-rooftop months. The indoor bar in the basement has all the atmosphere of an interstate-facing Holiday Inn bar, circa 1983.

But the view is very cool.

Longtime South Loop haunt Plymouth Restaurant & Bar and the building in which it sits at 327 S. Plymouth Court appear to be for sale, according to Chicago magazine.

One of my favorite downtown rooftop patios. Off the beaten path without a lot of the hoopla.

If they close it will be a sad day for me.

Unfortunately the restaurant will remain open. The rooftop bar is nice, but nicer if you order food in from other restaurants.

My tradition is to stop by for a drink after an exhausting day along the lakefront.

A nice relaxing stop before getting on the train.
