I imagine you would wind up eating at Randall's while hanging out on Devon and Cal. . In those days I was a regular myself. I particularly liked their kishke. But let's not get into now departed Devon eateries......

I ate at Randall's, especially since my girl friend lived on the 6200 block of Mozart. My fondest memories of Devon were Robert Hall, Minky's, the Ranch, Hobbby Models, the Nortown, and Thillens. My grandfather had a candy store on Devon & Newgard.

My parents had a Chinese restaurant a block north of Devon and Western. I grew up inside Hobby Models, bought all my toys at Cut-Rate Toys, and ate at Gold coin and La Petite for years and years. Thanks a lot for bringing up fond memories. Where else did you guys eat around there? and are any of the places you ate at still around and worth trying out? I haven't been to that part of town in so long.

About four or five lifetimes ago, we used to go to Pekin, on Devon just east of Western.

Was that in the spot that was once Papa Milano?

La Petite was the last place I had a good pizza burger.

I left the area about 10 years ago, although I was living further north and east. But I go back to the original Sally's in my memoriesof the area. Of course, there's a great thread about old places and Rogers Park was heavily mentioned. If you haven't delved into that thread I think you'd really enjoy it.

Wow, that's old! They sold pre-cooked chickens (whole chicken) long before they started selling them at the local grocery store. And they were great. They were right down the street from one of those 'messenger services' bookie joints. Every time I had a winning day I got a chicken.

I wish I'd got to eaten many more chickens

No. It was right next to the Devon Bank parking lot. It was called Yenching House and had a small asian grocery store attached to it. My parents sold the building and I believe now it's a butcher shop and some kinda furniture store/wholesaler. Peking house was just south of us on Western. There was also Mongolian House east of us down Devon, which I believe was owned by Bob Chinn's nephew. All three were good but of course I'm biased and, still to this day, think Yenching House was the best of the three.

I never had the pizza burger but I fondly remember the Club Sandwich. Oh man, I haven't thought about Sally's Stage in ages. Am I wrong or did the waitresses at Sallys roll around in rollerskates?

Actually Sally's Stage was many years later, after the fire. The Sally's I speak of was filled with gritty old waitresses that would break a hip if you ever tried to get them on skates.

But, yes ... Sally's Stage did feature waitresses on roller skates. I vaguely remember there was another Sally's Stage south of Devon and Western, but I don't remember where it was.

My uncle owned Friedman's on Western next to the Nortown Theatre. Across the street was Sally's Bar B Q and before that it was the Town Pump a restaurant with entertainment. I remember Nat King Cole played there. It was owned by the same people that owned the Town House restaurant on Sheridan and Morse. La Petite was Peter Pan before and it was owned by Kit Carson of Carson's fame. On the corner of Devon & Western before Gold Coin was Roberts. We weren't allowed to go there because they owned the spot were Friedmans was and played a dirty trick on us so we were banned from the restaurant.

Friedmans was open 24/7 and one of the regular nightly fressers was Fluky. During the 50's he owned a tavern on 63rd and Halsted and came into the restaurant on his way home after it closed.

Just a bit of old Devon and Western folklore.

I was a regular there when I was a kid. I had a common interest with Louie.....Horses! I also knew Max and Morrie but not as well as Louie.Usually came back there after a night at the harness races. Fluky was always there, along with "Wolfy",Fluky's Bro in-law, who owned "Wolfy's". Nate Silver who owned "Al Farber's" also stopped in a lot.
Even delivered for Sally's for quite a while.....Best delivery job in town!....$.25 cents delivery charge and believe it or not 15% of the bill. This was in the late sixties.

Wasn't Sally's closed by the late 60's. We moved to the suburbs in 67, Friedmans closed in 75 and I think Sally's closed way before. By the way Louie was married to the women who took the calls at Sallys, Marilyn until she died.

Paulette,I know they were open until at least 1970. I had a 1970 Volkswagen and delivered for them while going to school. Marilyn was certainly a character with a heart of gold.

I was always a big LaPetite fan myself. Great Dagwood burger, tho sometimes the olive burger or club sandwich would win out . After lunch, it was usually off to either Hobbymodels or General Camera across the street. Sometimes I'd stop in the candy store next to the Nortown for a candy apple if I needed something sweet. Roberts was an occasional stop as well, for some reason I recall thier francheezie and French Dip sandwiches as favorites.. there was also a bakery on that stretch of Devon, but I can't recall the name. Slice of pizza at AlForno or (?) Gigios also an option.
