Does anyone know where I can get Taiyaki within the city? It's essentially a Japanese pastry shaped like a fish filled with red bean paste.

There's a little ice cream sandwich I saw at Chicago Food on Kimball which reminded me of It. it was vanilla ice cream layered with red bean paste wrapped in a fish-shaped wafer. It was slightly bigger than a Klondike bar so I thought it was a steal at 89 cents.

I hadn't known about taiyaki until a co-worker shared one with me a few weeks ago. She gave it to me right out of the toaster oven, so it was warm and crispy. Sure beats a Pop-Tart! I will be picking up a bag of these things the next time I visit H Mart.

Not in the City, but Assi Plaza has a stand that makes them fresh while you wait. I'm not generally a big fan of bean paste, but getting these fishies hot off the press makes all the difference!

I wonder if one of the bakeries on Argyle might have them...

These sound awesome. Are they also the size of a Klondike bar? I never heard of this before.

In Korean they're called boong uh bbang (붕어빵) and if you get the frozen ones at H-Mart, make sure you don't try and put the ice-cream kind in the microwave, as my dad once nearly did! He's not known for reading instructions. The real boong uh bbang is sort of a pastry with red bean inside, the ice cream kind is like a cheap plain ice cream cone as the outer shell with vanilla soft serve mixed with sweetened red bean on the inside. Two totally different things, but I have to say the ice cream is a guilty pleasure of mine during the summertime. By the way, boong uh is a carp. I'll only eat carp in pastry form.

    Sharona,

I've bought the ice cream kind at Joong Boo Market (Chicago Food Corp), they were tasty as a one-off treat, but the quality of the ice cream and fish cone shell was very basic.
