just came back from shopping there - i was shocked to see this on the shelf. it's under $3 for 1.5 oz. i have no idea how it tastes yet, but seeing as how this will be the first time i've had mangosteen, i'm happy with whatever i can get.

Yuck. It's gross. Fresh mangosteen was one of my favorite food discoveries when I visited Thailand.
I had the same reaction (Neat-O, must buy that!) when I saw it at Trader Joe's.
But, the package (90% full) is currently gathering dust in my cabinet. It doesn't taste much like the hydrated fruit. Plus, part of the appeal of mangosteen is its lush, custardy consistency.

Never having previously tried mangosteen (and knowing it's virtually impossible to find fresh in the US), I was eager to try it when I saw it at TJ. The freeze-dried version...eh. But one thing I found curious...every few pieced I'd bite into would have something with a different texture and a nutty flavor. I looked on Wikipedia, and it says:

"Depending on the fruit size and ripeness, there might be seeds in the segments of the white edible part of the fruit. The seeds, however, are not edible unless cooked."

Hmm...so I assume I was getting seeds, but I find it curious that Wikipedia says they're inedible. I realize Wikipedia isn't the definitive source...can anyone confirm this? Should I be worried if they're leaving in a part of the fruit that technically is inedible? (Obviously, I ate these and lived, so I'm not too worried. No where near as worried after eating a bag of TJ spinach the afternoon before the spinach-scare news broke. But that caused no ill-effects either. *g*)
