Hello, I have done some searching and perusing on the board for some decent dinner ideas for my wife and I this coming weekend. Saw a Giacomo's recommendation but I think itailian is a bit heavy for our first anniversary. All of the other recommended places in the area seem to be decent Chinese/Asian type places that are maybe a step above carryout but not much more.

I guess if we were in the city, we'd be going to a place like Yoshi's Cafe or Roy's. That's along the lines of what I'm looking for in the Des Plaines/Mt. Prospect/Arlington Heights area. Does anyone have some decent ideas along those lines? Or an semi-upscale American place?

Retro Bistro on the corner of Golf and Busse behind the artemis in the strip mall.

Kittycorner from Giacomo's (i.e. the SE corner of Wolf and Central) is David's Bistro -- not as wide a menu as Retro Bistro, but I've enjoyed it more. David Maish is the chef/owner and the place is consistently good, although I'd appreciate if he changed his menu more frequently.

Most of the other finedine in the Des Plaines area leads you to the hotel/banquet stuff in the Rosemont area.

For somebody who mentions Yoshi's Cafe and Roy's, I think Retro Bistro would be a better choice than David's. It's more eclectic and even has some Asian influences.

If you are willing to go to Arlington Heights, Fish One might be an idea.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Might be that Retro Cafe is the way to go. Want something that is decent but not super-upscale and it sounds like that place fits the bill.

Lam's Place is probably one of the better restaurants for Chinese in Des Plaines but not for an anniversary. And I agree that most of the other Chinese restaurants are not that great.

I have never been to La Cave on Mannheim Road. Perhaps the other posters can chime in. It has been the place for corporate meals, weddings, and other special events. The interior is suppose to replicate the interior of the Palace of Versailles. I understand it's a little pricey but the food is suppose to very good as well. Worth checking out. Good luck! :D
