I am suddenly craving sushi (again), but my favorite item to get is always chirashi. A quick LTH search specific for chirashi only mentions Katsu as perhaps one good source. Anyone with some further suggestions? I know there are lots of sushi postings, but I was hoping someone had details on chirashi itself. Requirements are just that the fish is fresh (obviously), that there is a good variety of items, and a bonus would be that it is relatively inexpensive (by no means a must, but in NYC my benchmark was a place with great chirashi for $11.50, if you can believe it - and I swear it was actual seafood).

Chirashi is usually my benchmark/default sushi dish, and I have enjoyed the very excellent chirashi at Renga-Tai. At the the time, I thought it was one of the best renditions of this dish that I'd had in Chicago.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I actually decided to try Itto Sushi’s chirashi last night, figuring that the place is certainly established, and that the price would not be unreasonable (which my wife always appreciates). Here is how I would break down the experience of the chirashi itself:

Appearance: Decent. The fish was basically overlapping in the bowl with one shiso leaf to the side.

Variety: Good. A total of 9 items, consisting of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, mackerel, snapper, squid, octopus, boiled shrimp and tamago (egg).

Freshness/Taste: Good. Everything tasted clean and fresh, although it was certainly not transcendent.

Knifework: Fair. Some of the fish were cut somewhat ragged, the shrimp was torn, and the tuna had some whiteskin on it.

Value: Good. The cost was $15.95, which comes out to about $1.77 per piece. This is definitely cheaper than getting the sushi individually ($2.00-$2.50, except for the egg which was $1.50), but I bet there are even better values to be found around town.

Overall: Good. If you want a decent bowl of chirashi, Itto’s is more than adequate.

I realize that some of the above will vary on the season, the sushi chefdoing the preparation, etc., but I think this should give anyone interested a fair assessment. I think I would like to try Renga-Tai next, so I will report on that the next time I am out for chirashi.
