La Milanese closed?

I tried to visit La Milanese today to grab the highly regarded breaded steak sandwich.

My phone call at 3:00 led to a 'This number has been disconnected' message.

At about 5:30 pm when I drove by and it was closed (shutters were down).

Darn.

Sadly, it has been closed for a while. This was a true "mom and pop and son" place, and the last time I was there (some months ago) mom looked very ill. I have a sad feeling that she might have passed and that was that. They had such great pizza and breaded-crispy steak sandwiches, and really cared about quality. I miss them, and La Milanese.

I only was there one time and I've never been anywhere quite like it. A true and classic neighborhood spot. The food certainly wasn't healthy or that great (to me) but I certainly never forgot it. The most memorable thing about it was the gigantic portions. One order of lasagna was nearly two pounds! Classic Chicago for sure. The place was a bit smarmy though - all of the city workers, cops and politicians made it feel like a good-old-boys club.
