Can anyone recommend one? An old thread mentions Naperville and Geneva but nothing nearer west. Thanks.

A very, very good bakery in Western Springs:

    Kirschbaum's Bakery
    825 Burlington Avenue
    Western Springs, IL
    708.246.2894

Also on Burlington a very, very good butcher shop

    Casey's Foods
    915 Burlington Avenue
    Western Springs, IL
    708.246.0380

Time it right and hit Vie for an early dinner round the corner on Lawn...

I 2nd the Kirschbaum's recommendation. It's truly a traditional bakery, and the prices are generally very reasonable. Some things are better than others, depending on what you're looking for.

Another option is Kirsten's in Burr Ridge. I've mostly eaten their cakes.

Tell us if there is something in particular you're shopping for at the bakery.

Thanks for the suggestions. That is what I am looking for -- desserts, like cakes or pies, maybe pastries. Anyone ever buy baked stuff from Whole Foods? Is it any better than standard grocery store goodies?

Kirschbaum's has some of my favorite pies, and they are very reasonably priced. They have a wide range of cakes. Most are good.

I've only had more of the standard cakes at Kirsten's, but they are good.

Kirshbaum's also has a great selection of assorted desserts - cream puffs, tea cookies, apple slices, great smiley face sugar cookies. They have wonderful cinnamon swirl bread. Good selection of coffee cakes. Just about everything you'd expect to find at a traditional bakery. They sell out of stuff quickly and selection varies from visit to visit. Just try to get there early, especially on weekends and around holidays. Mob scene.
