Anybody know anything about the restaurant supply place on Harlem near Belmont ( I think)? The sign says Cash Register, but clearly, there is a full range of kitchen stuff visible through the window. Open to the public? Any good stuff?

I have walked and driven past this place thousands of times and I have never seen it open or with any life/activity inside. I am fairly sure the registers and other items in the window have never changed and I have lived in this neighborhood for 23 years. Sorry I could not be of more help! I will take a closer look next time I'm on Harlem.

I drove past about 2:30 Friday afternoon. FWIW there was a lighted sign saying "Open" and some lights were on inside.

Ever the savant to my fellow food enthusiasts, I radically altered my hectic schedule and arranged the necessary transport to interrogate the coordinates above. Whew!

This homey store and repair shop has quietly resided for over 25 years on this stretch of Harlem near say Pasta Fresh, Riviera, many more. Yes, they are open to the public and have a worthwhile array of restaurant equipment.

If you need a pizza peel (and who doesn’t) they probably got your size:

I was and am sorely tempted by this mini deli slicer. Oh for want of kitchen counter space! (Ketchup squirter added for perspective.)

Perhaps these are dyes for making pasta, or perhaps parts of the enigma machine:

Largest wok for sale I’ve seen outside of Chinatown (salt shaker added for perspective) or perhaps a rod detector:

They’ve got some other things too including cash registers:

This seems like a good enough time to query those here for a source of restaurant takeout containers. I need and use paper ones, the plastic ones with snap on lids, and the larger platter/bowl types with lids (lighter plastic).

Since the Edward Don outlet closed, I'm looking for a new source.

    Any ideas?

There are a couple of whosale paper products suppliers on Randolph in the West Loop. Both are located betweeen Halsted and Morgan and both carry what you are looking for (and more).

Was that the one on North Ave. in Addison?

The restaurant supply store in Addison you're thinking of is Schweppe in Lombard (just east of IL Route 53). Still there.....still going strong.

That's their new location. They used to be about 1 mile east at the corner of Grace and North Ave.

I've been going there for a long time (~20 years) and they've always been just east of Route 53. If they were at Grace and North, it had to be quite some time ago.

My distance calculations might be a little off. It may only be a few blocks, but they moved just a few years ago to the new blue and white building from the old brown brick building down the street. Either way they are still going strong and I visit frequently.

Right, thanks. I used to buy their industrial sized bags of lime jello. I know, weird.

Thanks for taking one for the team, Ramon! I thought I might get there with the in-laws in town this weekend, but they were satisfied by the Polish deli at Grand and Harlem -which was supernice by the way. Maybe next weekend.

That's Kolatek's. They rock. Great meats, soups, and deli items. Their bread is great.
