Hey everyone, I love burgers and all but I need a change!! I'm looking for some fast relatively healthy food. I work in Niles and drive West to Des Plaines after work. Are there any places on the way that are similar to Pita Inn or a place with Salmon and brown rice bowls? Anything to that effect would be great. I grew up in Evanston and don't really know this area too well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Matt.

For fast food, Baja Fresh in Niles has some "healthier" choices, not salmon and brown rice but grilled chicken and salad. I like their salads and their fish tacos. They have a grilled mahi mahi taco now as an alternative to their fried fish tacos.

What route are you taking? Dempster? Oakton? Touhy?

Baja Fresh is on Touhy, just east of Lehigh, and sort of in the same stripmall as the Walmart, but it is closer to Touhy and not set back off the street.

How about the food court at Super H mart, the new Korean hupermarket in Niles?

I usually drive down Dempster or Oakton.

If you are ever around wolf and central, stop in to the Salerno's on Wolf and Kingston. You can get a hefty deli sammich with some interesting choices like roasted peppers, artichokes, shaved prosciutto etc (PLEASE get a side of pesto mayo!) and one of their daily pasta specials for under 10 bux. It's pretty good stuff for what it is, and for the price.

On a side note, for a NOT so healthy burger alternative, in Des PLaines, there is a Las Asada's just south of the motorcycle dealership on Rand and river - just north of the old mcdonald's. If you've never had a real char grilled skirt steak taqueria experience, PLEASE give it a try. Don't expect white table cloths here, it's just a joint that knows how to grill up some steak. If you like steak tacos / burritos though, this may be a bad choice, since I've never known anyone to not get HOOKED for life on this place. I'll never go back to the pan fried chewy steak that most of the Chicagoland taco places dish up.
