The story is interesting because the grocery chain, Albert Heijn, decided that enough of its clientele was Muslim that it would be a good idea to go large scale into halal in the meat department. Problem is, halal meat is produced under special exemption from a law in the Netherlands that requires animals that are slaughtered by having their throats cut to be anaesthetised first (shocked, gassed, bonked on the head, etc.). Now, allegedly (according to representatives of the islamic community) halal butchering cannot involve anaesthetising the beasts, so Dutch animal rights people have lodged a complaint. Albert Heijn ain't your corner halal butcher, the intended exceptions to the law, so then...
The courts shall perhaps have to decide.
