I just watched an episode of the Sundance Channel's series Iconoclasts featuring Michel Baryshnikov and Alice Waters. This is a great series that pairs up two "Iconoclasts" from different disciplines who happen to know each other and then just films them in conversation in their respective environments. This is an excellent series and this episode, in particular, will be of interest to many on LTH Forum. Alice gets to expound at length about her philosphy and at one laments the fact that now that she has achieved "celebrity" status, she doesn't get to cook all that much anymore. It is scheduled again for this afternoon (Saturday 11/4) at 1:00 P.M. (Sundance Channel) and a few other times during the week..

I was unable to catch the show and, from your description, it really does sound quite interesting. I'm sorry to have missed it for both participants.

However. I don't want to be difficult...oh, hell, yes I do: doesn't Alice Waters own a restaurant? Can't Alice Waters choose to cook at that restaurant any time she wants? If Alice Waters isn't in charge of her own celebrity, then who is? If she is letting all the celebrity fans who want to see and talk with her run her life, then I have some trouble working up a lot of sympathy. This strikes me as akin to George Clooney complaining that with all his celebrity he doesn't have time to act any more. You choose your life. I'm not saying she can't do what she wants; only that she can't choose her life and then complain about it.

Otherwise, I hope I can catch this some time in the future. I still would love to see it. Thanks for calling it to our attention.

She travels the world evangelizing the use of locally sourced ingredients and promoting her Edible Schoolyard Project . She feels it is a higher calling, but misses the "good old days" much like the rest of us. The show is going to be on again today at 10:00 A.M. and a few more times this week.
