Did we ever decide whether or not there was a place with a big-screen TV that would not object to having a bunch of crazed foodies watching their sport of choice, cheering on the home team?

I think the two most likely choices are Honey One and Candlelite.

Little Three Happiness has TVs that could be easily watched. I think there are at least 2 of them.

That Candlelite is a bar makes it seem more copacetic, but if I recall, they have several small tvs rather than any large ones.

But I'd be hip to gathering somewhere to watch, I think that would be a lot of fun.

Oh please, oh please, just not on a Friday night!

I know this will be MUCH more fun in a crowd.

How about approaching ESPNZone?
This is sport, after all.

it's competition yes, not quite sure it's a sport as i've participated in similar events myself and that never crossed my mind, but would you want to eat there on purpose? i only suspect i know the answer. e for effort though.

Honestly?
For bar food it is good as it gets.
Context is important.
They do a decent burger (massive) and the other food, for bar food, is pretty good.

I love Alinea and Avenues, but ESPNZone is a great place to watch a Bears game (or any great competition).

i'm game.

Considering that the premiere broadcast of the Cantu Iron Chef episode will be going up against the NFL Conference Championships, I'd say no.

Of course that means that none of us will be watching Iron Chef either.

This is Chicago. We have our priorities. We will have to cheer for the savage defeat of whichever team knocks off the Bears in the first round.

EC, do you have reason to believe the NFC championship game will be played that late at night?

That said, even if it isn't, it might be kind of chaotic at ESPN Zone.

Yup, that would be me. Look for details tomorrow afternoon. The episode airs at 8PM central time, for those who need to plan post Bears game timing.

So here's the scoop. I am waiting for the go-ahead on a possible location for the Iron Chef-- Battle Beet Event. If everyone can be patient, I should know by tomorrow afternoon where and when. Thanks.

Gale Gand attended a Chicago Foodways Roundtable meeting recently. I asked her about the secret ingredient issue, ie was it really secret? She advised six weeks in advance of the competition they were advised of three secret ingredient candidates. It did allow them to prepare, though from her reaction when fennel was unveiled. I had the sense it wasn't their favorite of the three. Unfortunately I didn't have time to inquire if my hunch was indeed true.

Out of curiosity, may I ask did she attend as a featured speaker/participant or just out of interest in the subject matter?

I'm not really surprised, I guess, since most people like to do something different than their job in their time off, but I think it's interesting an a little unusual when chefs pursue their foodie interests in a manner similar to the rest of us.

So here's the situation: it may be hard for Honey 1 to host us on Sunday at 8PM because of their 9PM closing and the fact that lots of people want to watch a second football game that airs after the Bears' game. So, I won't have an answer until tomorrow on this plan.

In the meantime, it seems like time to come up with some other ideas. We need a place with cable TV. Oh, the irony!

Any bright ideas out there? Seems like about 15 people may attend.

Did you try Candlelite? They have plenty of TVs. Village Pizza in Skokie might be a similar option, too. Or, to go way out, I watched the Bears game last Sunday at Cubby Bear North, which has LCD TVs in each booth, which can be tuned to whatever channel you like.

Personally, I'd be fine with waiting for the Thursday @ 8 pm screening if that works out better for location. (And maybe a little because I don't know if I can make it out on Sunday.)

But really, it's not like I'm going to "hear all about it" anywhere else in a way that ruins watching it later.
