    LTH,

Went to Wings Around the World yesterday with Steve Z and Mike Sula. Mike caught wind of the place, thought it sounded interesting, he was right.

Flavors popped, bright, clean, well thought out, we tried 11 of 34-flavors representing 9-countries each was distinctive with nice balance. Kamikaze, labeled hot, is loaded with habanero and packed an endorphin inducing punch, while Maple Twist, maple syrup laced with butter, evoked morning pancakes. Andre, manager and flavormeister, said he got the idea for Maple Twist while eating at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles.

Lemon Garlic was particularly good as was our side of Cheese Wedges, basically fried mac and cheese. French fries were crisp and the Banana Pudding, made by Tammy's Treats, was terrific.

Take out only, though they didn't mind us eating in the sparse, but comfortable, waiting area. There was a 15-minute wait as everything is made to order, though it speeded along as Wings is one of those places that generates good cheer amongst line mates, we chatted with 3-4 people trading tips and receiving menu suggestions.

The owner has a lot of confidence, deservedly so in my opinion, in his product as he's directly across the street from Popeye's and KFC, and within a block of Church's and a JJ Fish.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

Are these entire wings or disjointed wings?

Too bad about the carryout-only, too... wings don't travel very well :(

I agree that Wings Around the World is a very interesting place. It's very much akin to Buffalo Wild Wings in it's approach to multi-flavored chicken wings. The main difference, besides the fact that it's strictly a carry-out joint and not a sports bar, is that rather than the somewhat one dimensional flavor range and constant upcharges of BW3, Wings Around the World's sauces have real range to them and you are welcome to mix and match flavors in a single order (minimum 5 wings of each flavor). The wings themselves are decent size, but not too large that you can only eat a few and miss out on trying multi-flavors. Those Kamikaze wings mentioned above really hit the spot for a heat lover like me! They're not simply hot for heat's sake, but pack a good amount of flavor in the sauce. In addition to the flavors mentioned by Gary, I particularly liked the parmesan-garlic wings.

One other thing is that they offer both fried and grilled wings, although grilled weren't available when we visited. I'm not sure if it was because the single cook was overwhelmed by the rush of business or the fact that the gas company was there doing some work at the time.

Read about this place in the Reader and decided to take a trip down. Empty when we arrived (8pm Friday), we ordered 3 types of wings (Fire Jerk, Parmesan Garlic, Cosmic Curry) and onion rings. The rings were a definite pass...soggy and lifeless, but the wings were all delicious. The jerk had a definite kick, but was not overpowering. The parm garlic were moist and very garlicky. The curry a little sweet, a little spicy.

I had a wing craving last weekend and decided to pick up from WATW. Very glad I did: the wings and sauces were almost uniformly delicious, especially the buffalo, jerk, and sweet ginger bbq (which was maybe bordering on too sweet for me, but beth loved it).

Prices are pretty reasonable, too: 30 for $16, with the ability get up to 6 flavors in that 30.

I'm very, very glad to have this place on the south side. We're probably going to pick up another order tonight. I just wish we were closer, as the more liquidy sauces didn't travel too well, the bits of chicken skin sitting in the sauce tending to get a little soggy.

Credit also to Abeng, who is a friendly, great guy who clearly puts a lot of care into his food.

Oh, also, last week he added about 12 new flavors. I don't have them handy, but I think most of them were combinations of a few of the other ones on the menu. I'll try to remember a few of 'em tonight.

We've gone there a few times for lunch and always been pleased. I found the jerk was good for a couple wings - I ordered five and found myself growing bored.

Hmm..haven't been there for awhile. Might have to go this week.

I recently went on an endeavor to Wings around the world with a few of my friends.

    First impressions:
    -the people are nice
    -wide variety of sauces
-no place to sit and eat?
    -food takes really long
    -food is very expensive

We ordered a lot of wings so we got to try a good amount of them sauces. Listed are the "flavors" we tried:
    -Spicy buffalo
    -curry
    -honey jerk
    -spicy ranch
    -kamikaze
    -lemon garlic
    -parmesan garlic
    -honey mustard
    -bourbon
-some flavor with the word plum in it, i can't remember

I have to say that spicy buffalo and lemon garlic are without a doubt, my favorite flavors there. Something about the spicy buffalo is very flavorful, unlike most places.

The kamikaze has a latency factor in it. It tastes like wings without sauce, until the heat kicks you. Probably not a really good choice for a flavor. I wouldn't recommend it, unless you really want to try it or you believing being punched in the mouth, eyes and nose repeatedly is better than trying wings. But not so bad, it goes away pretty easily.

Was definitely not a fan of honey jerk. Just tasted like salt. Honey mustard was definitely different from most honey mustard sauces. Bourbon was nice and sweet. Spicy ranch was pleasantly ranchy and mildly spicy.

Is it worth nearly $0.75? Probably, only once. After that, go somewhere else.

How come no one has posted a review on O'Donavon's Friday night 25 cent wings yet? The best BBQ sauce and decent buffalo sauce. There's also a lot of meat and it's JUICY.

Anyone brave enough to make a review?

    $0.75/wing? 30 wings are $16 ($0.53/ea) and 50 wings are $25 ($0.50/ea).

I guess if you're buying 5-10 wings at a time, the price is pretty steep. But they'll happily give you more than one flavor in an order of 30 or 50. For a while, it was a minimum of 5 wings of each flavor for the larger orders, now I think it's 10. If you're there and see the owner and tell him you're interested in trying a lot of flavors, I'm sure he'd be flexible.

Some of the flavors are hits, some are misses, and the place has its inconsistencies, but I love the buffalo/spicy buffalo, Beth loves the "sweet ginger bbq", and the people are great and the price is fair.

edit: I note in one of my posts above I accidentally mixed up Andre and Abeng. I've fixed it.

Yes, thanks so much for the report! Too bad it's a much less convenient location for me, but hopefully business is better and rent is cheaper :)

Last night, I was on the south side for a monthly gig in Evergreen Park, and it had been awhile since I'd been to Wings Around the World. I called, and the phone was disconnected. I drove by, and it was gone. I sent Beng (the owner) a Facebook message, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

Does anybody know what happened? Are they closed for good, or (hopefully) just moving again? I'd hate to never be able to have those wings again. My only regret is not having gone there more frequently, as it's not exactly near my house.
