I'm nearly done with the book (everything but the fiction at the end), and I have to say, my favorite asshole has mellowed. A couple of the pieces are genuinely uplifting and even optimistic. He liked Vegas despite himself (more than the show episode let on), and sees great possibilities in just about everything except for corporate fast food.
His writing has a great "voice" -- especially if you've heard him on TV, you can hear his patter, patois and cant come through the writing. His humor is infective and had me rolling on the floor at times.
There's a little more insight as to why he's on the Travel Channel instead of Food, he continues his long-running love affair with all things Vietnamese, and his fandom for the work ethic of immigrants.
It's a highly recommended read. It's in nice, small, bathroom-break-sized chunks so it's not a big investment in your mental space. Savor the Nasty Bits.
What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?
