Does anyone know where I can find beet juice? A search on the forum revealed no information and my local grocer had no tips for me.

    Thanks.

Buy some beets and juice them. Peel, chop, and blend/puree, and then strain through cheese cloth.

I wouldn't advise drinking straight beet juice.

Yep, inside of a beet is the best place to find beet juice. Ed's method works great if you have a blender.

If you don't have a Juiceman or other juicer, you could see if a place with a juice bar (like, I believe, the Treasure Island on Wells) would be willing to juice up some beets for you.

Thanks, gang. I don't have a blender, but I do have a decent food processor. I will give that a shot.

Also, its for cooking beets in as part of a recipe, not for drinking.

Any decent store stocking Polish and other eastern European things--some places I've picked it up are Forest View Deli on Milwaukee just inside the city limits, Niles Polish Deli I believe, and the stores catering to Russians in Niles--Greenwood, International, etc. should have it.

I agree with annieb that the Polish and Slavic stores are probably the places most likely to stock beet juice. Here are a few places you might check out for your beet nectar:

    Ukrainian Village Grocery
    2204 W. Chicago Ave.
    Chicago, IL
    60622-4827

    Andy's Deli
    5442 N. Milwaukee Ave.
    Chicago, Il 60630

We can buy beets and carrots by the 5 kg bag at the Marché Jean-Talon here in Montreal. So, naturally, TODG brings a couple of bags home, and we juice. And we juice. And we juice. She really likes the stuff. I sort of do, too.

Anything you can use to smoosh the beets up--a food processor will work just fine--does the job enough to render cheesecloth a perfect filtration scheme. And the stuff, for some unknown reason, holds in the 'fridge for quite a while before fermentation commences.

Heh-heh, as advised, do NOT drink the beet juice straight! It does the weirdest things to one's throatal systems. You'll think you've been slipped some corrosive substance (and maybe you have!), and that you'll be clearing your throat forevermore. Very odd experience.
