There are a fair number of posts about Chiyo on this board, the Search function will take you to a few, including this one that includes discussion of shabu shabu.

ABC 7's Steve Dolinsky just did a story on Korean-operated Shabu House in Niles. It looked pretty good and WAAAAY cheaper than Chiyo in Albany Park. I'm excited to try it out, not having had Shabu Shabu for about a year (since I left San Francisco and that city's venerable Shabu Sen restaurant).

    Any previous experiences?

This is our new favorite restaurant for Shabu Shabu. We used to go downtown to CoCoRo for a long time for Shabu Shabu. The owner has since passed away and his wife has moved back to Japan or New York. The place is now very different. But - Shabu House in Niles is a great place to go for Shabu Shabu. They have many different variations - you can have Vegi Shabu, Seafood Shabu or the traditional beef Shabu Shabu. The service is excellent as are their prices. It is definitely a place to be tried. You will love it. It is located at Golf and Milwaukee in Niles in a Shopping Center where the Jewel is located.

I had a fine dinner at Shabu House earlier this week. The pajun was very good, though on the greasy side. The scallions and seafood (shrimp, squid, artificial crab) were nicely balanced. We ordered the beef & seafood shabu shabu. The beef was fine enough, but I thought the vegetables looked a little sad. Also, the set up of the tables made sharing shabu shabu hard. We sat at a table for two with two recesses for heating. We had the shabu shabu set up on my cousin's side of the table. I had to stand to reach the pot. The standout of our meal was the galbi, which was fantastic--the cut of the meat, the marinade, the done-ness and the garnish all were perfect.

The looped Hungry Hound segment on the big flat screen TV got annoying quickly, but otherwise the space at Shabu House is comfortable and the service pleasant.

    HS,

Galbi does indeed look fantastic, was it cooked in the kitchen or did you cook it table side?

    Enjoy,

It was cooked in the kitchen and brought to us promptly. As far as I could tell, the only table cooking at Shabu House is for shabu shabu.

I just went Shabu House in Niles this past week, and thought it was excellent. It was my first time ever going to a shabu shabu restaurant(something I'd wanted to do for many years), and thought the portions of food you get are great for their prices. I loved the sesame sauce you get with whatever meat you decide to get, and both desserts I tried(ordered the fried ice cream, and tried a friend's sweet potato dessert) were great.

Just so you know they have gift certificates at www.restaurant.com. You can get them on the cheap there. Just watch for promotions.

I would assume it was Shabu House, as there is a $25 certificate available for $10 on the site. If you search zip code 60714 and results within 1 mile, it will be easy to find.
