What are the best eats off just off the Red Line? I'm looking for places that are super-close to any of the 37 stations from 95th/Dan Ryan to Howard (although I'm not particularly interested in the places surrounding the stops in the Loop, River North or Chinatown).

I suppose bonus points are in order if the place is actually under the tracks.

I'll start by mentioning a board favorite:

    TAC Thai Kitchen
    Stop: Sheridan
    3930 N Sheridan Rd
    (773) 327-5253

    Thanks!

Sun Wah and GNR Award Winner Tank are both just off the El at Argyle, not to mention Thai Avenue and several others. Pound for pound, I'd bet that the Argyle stop is in at least iin the the top two (good) chow-dense stops on the CTA.

And you have all of the Chinatown eateries in the other direction.

Since you said "best," I'll refrain from mentioning Pete's, which is a very dingy greasy spoon adjoining the Howard station. (Well, I guess I just mentioned it, but I've never eaten there, and haven't really meant to try it either...)

My one visit was not too inspiring, but Gruppo di Amici is right off the Jarvis stop. Some folks have had pretty good experiences.

At Morse, if you go out the "back door" of the station, you'll find the Heartland Cafe right there at Lunt and Glenwood. The food is not anything I have ever craved, but it's notable for a nice outdoor dining area and a pretty good bar.

My favorite place near the northern end of the red line would be Ethiopian Diamond, which is a short walk from the Granville stop.

Pete's is cool, just because it is so dingy and uninviting. Actually you have Jamiaca Jerk at 1631 W. Howard, and around the corner at 7605 N. Paulina is Tickie's Belizean, which I like a lot.

I have only had breakfast there while waiting for the bus to the airport. I had eggs, potatoes and ham off-the-bone (or is it on-the bone?). The ham was good. The coffee was weak. The rest was greasy but passable and cheap.

Chinatown is just off the Red Line at the Cermak- Chinatown station. One of my favorites is The Happy Chef at 2164 S. Archer. Check the board for other people's picks.
