I'd like to buy a friend a traditional tagine for his birthday. I know All Clad and Le Creuset make them but I think he would like a traditional clay one.

I've seen them online but I'd like to see it in person before I buy it so if anyone knows of somewhere in Chicago I can buy one please let me know.

Cook's Illustrated has a very nice review of tagine equipment in their May 2006 issue. They also list some sources.

Sooo, you like wine and are looking for something good to read? Maybe *this* will do the trick! :)

Here's a site that offers good prices on traditional tagines -- along with a few recipes and such classic Moroccan ingredients as argan oil and preserved lemons. They also carry the "mini" tagines I saw on tables all over Morocco (and bought for myself) for salt and pepper.

There's a Moroccan store on Clark in Andersonville (west side of the street, north of Wilson) that had tagines for sale last time I was in there (a couple weeks ago). Make sure you get one that's OK for cooking...some are strictly ornamental.

Also, I believe Sur La Table sells them, and they have a store at North & Halsted (among other places).

Strangely, I saw tagines for sale last time I was at IKEA; at least you'd be able to check them out in person, and they might be cheaper than some of the other sources already mentioned.

Marrakesh Restauratn, 1413 N. Ashland, also sells Moroccan items, and may well have tajines for sale.
