I'm relatively new to the world of Indian food (I had a bad experience a few years ago that put me off it) and have discovered the joys of the Himalayan Restaurant in Niles. They serve some complimentary dips when you come in- one is a sweet/sour dip with a syrup-y texture, one is some VERY spicy pickled peppers and other veggies, I'm guessing, and the other is a thin sauce, that seems to be pureed cilantro, with maybe something else in there.

Does anyone know what the dips are called? I like the dips, but my mom likes the hot peppers I'd and be able to ask for them when I do carry-out because they don't usually add it into carry-out orders. And if I can find recipes so I can make them at home, that would be great too! Thanks!

They're chutneys. The brown one is Tamarind based, the green is Cilantro, and the spicy pickle-y is probably mango chutney or Indian pickle.

    Hope this helps

As Diannie said, they're Tamarind, Cilantro (corriander) and a pickle. You can actually buy this stuff at Indian grocery stores. Try Patel Brothers on Devon (that's where I usually get mine), and they have a location in Schaumburg. Otherwise I'm sure there are plenty of Indian or International grocery stores up in your neck of the woods.

BTW - the Tamarind chutney is an excelent dip for Chicken nuggetts :D

Ditto. And the variations seem endless. I made one about 8 years ago that one of my friends still asks about...I have no idea of what was in it

    You can can them, too.

Thanks so much! Based only on my limited experience with them, I guess I thought chutney was more like a relish, like chunkier.
