I've been hearing people rave about donut peaches for a couple years, but I've got this standard, y'see: Food with fur on it either wasn't prepared right by the butcher, or has been sitting in my fridge too long.
So when I saw UFO Nectarines in Jewel the other day (I was just grabbing some lettuce for dinner on the way back from the post office, I
swear), I grabbed four. At $3.49/lb, I was taking a gamble (and I'm sure I could find them at Jerry's or elsewhere for a lot less), but they smelled wonderful. They're small, about an inch tall, three times that wide.
And they are wonderful: About four small bites per fruit, they have a pit like a medium-sized plum, and juicy, pale flesh. The flavor is a bit nectarine, a little plum, floral and a bit tart. I'll buy these again, but hopefully at a more reasonable price.
What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?
