We have friends coming in from VA in a couple weeks and we were wondering if anyone has been to Salbute recently...if so, what did you think? We haven't been there so any advice/info would be great.

    Thanks.

While the food was pretty good, we found it to be expensive and perhaps a bit overrated. It's in a nice enough environment (downtown Hinsdale), but I don't know that it would be my first choice for entertaining friends from out of town. The restaurant is quite small, and the service seemed like it could be hit or miss. Unless you have your heart set on it, I think you probably could find a better meal and better environment for entertaining guests in the Hinsdale/Oak Brook/Oakbrook Terrace area.

It chaffed my butt to be greeted with watery salsa and flavor-free industrial grade tortilla chips, but I found the entrees at this place to be pretty good (we liked venison chops on yucca/blue cheese mash and pork tenderloin with marscapone and dates), but everything is on the pricey side and, yes, I do believe the place is somewhat overrated.

Understanding the Salbute may not be the best choice, in your opinions, any other "one-of-a-kind" storefront restaurants that you would recommend. We line in Naperville and want something different. Oak Brook has too many of the LEYE restaurants, not that it is bad, but we are looking for something different. I did a search an cannot find anything that fits the bill.

There are some good suggestions in this thread:

    Tango in Naperville
    Yerbabuena in Lisle
    Angeli's in Naperville

There is quite a bit of info about the Western 'burbs in the LTH archives. Look for old posts by dicksond and Flip, among others.

Ron and I gently disagree about Yerbabuena, though I suppose I would choose it over Salbute, if only because I find the Hinsdale scene so hard to stomach, but I definitely support and second Tango and Angeli's.

Mykha's in Glen Ellyn is nice, too. Pretty nice cooking with a Vietnamese accent and flavorings, though not really Vietnamese food. I really liked the place, though after a few visits I found the food to have a sameness in seasoning and composition that caused me to lose interest. But it was great for my first couple of visits.

Cebu is a pretty neat Filipino place in Downers Grove, and Tay Do and Village Hut in Glendale Heights are excellent if you want Vietnamese, or a style of Indian, vegetarian food you could not easily find elsewhere. Neither is terribly fancy, but both are pleasant places, great value and excellent food. On the other hand, if you want the charm of Hinsdale, Salbute is great and their main courses are interesting.
