    Hi all,

I've been trying to look for some spanish chorizo. I live and Joliet...and while I would like to stay as close to home as I can...I do drive up to Whole Foods (off 83) for my beef and seafood. So I don't mind a drive either.

    thanks,
    dan

Are you really looking for Spanish chorizo - or will Mexican-style chorizo do?

I'm looking for Spanish chorizo for use in paella. I've asked around at a few places and so far I'm having a tough time finding it.

You mean the hard, cured/semi-cured stuff? Have you checked Fox and Obel? (Not near Joliet, but if you're desperate . . . )

Please later post and let us know where you found it!

You can also get Palacios chorizo from latienda.com, amazon, and other online retailers. Dunno if that's any easier for you though :)

Since it's a cured meat, you might consider ordering it online - a quick search turned up the following source: LaTienda.com

(after hitting "Submit" I noticed that they have a chorizo-of-the-month club!)

If you have a chance to do a little outing in the city, for example, on a Saturday near lunchtime, go to Café Iberico/Deliberico on Lasalle; have a nice meal and then buy some Spanish groceries, including fine cheeses and sausages at the deli counter in the back of the north-room. They have at least two regional varieties of Spanish chorizo normally in stock (though they are domestically produced -- in California) -- they're good and will serve the purpose well. They're cryo-vacked and store very well, so you can stock up.

There's also a Whole Food in the neighbourhood (Dearborn and Superior), so you could have a nice meal and do some good shopping without having to repark the car.

If you have lunch, I recommend the octopus highly.

    Hi Antonius,

Thanks for the recommendation. I will try it some time when I go to the city. Maybe I'll bring my soft sided cooler in case I fond a bunch of goodies :)

I did some searching through your posts and have to thank you for all the good discussion :) I'll be referring back to them from time to time :)

    thanks!

I just went to place an order (from LaTienda)for some cooking chorizo and bomba rice. Shipping was $23.00  I canceled the order...I think I'll make a drive up to Chicago.

Oh, my lord! So sorry to have steered you wrong! I guess they overnight in dry ice, which tends to be expensive.

Heck for $23, I'd drive it down to you!

    Dan,

Many thanks for the kind words and sorry to hear that La Tienda turned out to be a bad option. On the other hand, I do think you'd enjoy a trip out this way to Deliberico and stocking up would definitely make sense.

I have a crazy schedule over the next few weeks but if you're coming up this way in mid to late September, maybe we could get together over some octopus and garrotxa and chorizo.

    Hi there :)

I just wanted to make it clear that La Tienda wasn't a bad idea at all. It was just the overnight shipping for the sausage that raised the rate to high. I may still use them for some other stuff.

Antonius...thanks for the offer :) I'm not sure when I'm going to go up there...but I'll have to keep that in mind.

    Take care all!

I finally found a store near Joliet that carries Spanish chorizo. I was at Succulent Seafood, in Naperville, and stopped in Casey's grocery store. Sure enough they had Palacios chorizo :)

It's funny looking at this thread with the 2007 date. I've been looking for someplace near my house that carries Spanish chorizo since I started the thread. Since that time I've now got two wonderful paella pans (22" and 13.5") and have become addicted to Iberico Bellota jamon. Oh is it glorious!

What's the nearest place to Joliet that carries Iberico ham? I keep telling the cheese shop near me (Wine & Cheese by TCC) that if they would buy a leg of Iberico Bellota it would easily help sell more cheese and wine. I don't think they believe me...although they've never tried it!

One of these days I need to bring them a sample :)

    take care all,

Get thee to a Costco! They have Iberico in four ounce packages, from Fermin...

That's a good point. But I did check the Costco near me, in Naperville, and they didn't carry it. I did get a pass to check out some of the other food items, but I would still buy much of the stuff from other stores (seafood, cheese, meat, etc.)

Now...if they had Iberico ham at the store near me...that may have been a different story :)

    thanks,

    Dan:

Was at the Oak Brook Costco a few days ago and they had Iberico in stock. Might be worth a call. One thing that I particularly like at Costco are the prime New York strip and ribeye steaks. $11/lb! Also mussels for $2/lb (5 lb bag) and clams as well, on the weekends. Very good olive oils, too.

Swing by Oak Brook and then hit board favorite Katy's Noodles on the way home...
