Trader Joe's has had them the last two weeks - black figs for $3.69 a pound (large box that looks to be about the size of two smaller pints boxes). I bought some, nicely ripe & sweet too.

My first sighting of the season this weekend at Fresh Farms in Niles - good-sized pallet of black figs for $8.99 I think, too big a package for this single guy, but they did look nice and plump. Anyone spotted any green/white ones yet? They're my fave.

Try hamemade Fig, Goat Cheese and Rosemary pizza. Use an olive oil base, not tomato sauce. Had this gem at the Chapaquoit Grill on Cape Cod, MA.

Green ones were at Marketplace on Oakton the last two weekends.

Do any of the Chicago Farmers Markets carry fresh Mid-Western figs?

I know it's CA fig season, but if I can buy from someone in the midwest that would be my preference, yes I know I will probably spend more money that way, but someone's got to stimulate the economy.

That would be great. Fig taste changes so much within hours of being harvested that it would be nice to be able to taste figs that were grown nearby.

The first figs I ever ate were picked off trees in an abandoned orchard on the island of Majorca. There were also abandoned almond orchards. Truly a garden of Eden. I've never had a fig that comes anywhere close.

I don't think fig trees grow in the Midwest. The winters are too cold.

Maybe global climate change will let us grow figs...

    HI,

Last week at H-Mart I saw a box of 24 figs from California for $6.99.

    Regards,

A co-worker here in NYC grows white and black figs in her backyard in Queens. I was surprised when she brought in a bag and they were as sweet as any I've had (well, maybe not Palestine sweet).

New York's climate is marginally warmer than that of the lower Midwest. Chicago figs? Why not?

$1.99 per pint at Stanley's on Elston this afternoon. They look, and taste, pretty good.

Thanks C2- I'd also read that thread which got me to wondering if any of our local farmers were growing them. I met a woman last week, took her some elderflower cordial, and she has a fig tree on the northside of the city. It's young and she's offered me some cuttings. She said she got it from Nichols'Farm.

Then I read this fantastic thread about a 100+ year old fig tree down in Cairo, Il that came over from Lebanon. Wow!

I'm on a hunt for local figs for a bit longer I think.

We got a fig tree last summer from the Green City Market and I'm pretty sure it was from Nichols. Unfortunately, Kevin and I have thumbs that are as brown as they come and we didn't do anything in particular over the winter, so it died.
Was at the new Mariano's Market on Western yesterday and they had green figs 5 for $1 that are quite good.
