    Go David!!!

I just listened to you on Sirrott's show. It was great to hear you speak about LTH. The fact that Sirott agreed with the GNR of Gene & Jude's was nice to hear, he's been going there. I liked the explanation of what LTH means and so did he.

I wasn't able to listen. Is this posted on the web anywhere? Why isn't there TiVo for radio?

Thank you Donna - very kind. In my harsh self-evaluation, I regret not naming more GNRs. He gave me a particularly good opening at the end to list the nearby GNRs and I blew it completely. I guess you live and learn.

I did like Sirott's rule for vacation dining - the family cannot eat anywhere they could eat at at home. That is what I call good parenting. I tried something similar, but the kids would not stand for it, so we would have two meals. First the kids ate whatever crap they wanted (it was their vacation, too!) and then they would sit and read or otherwise entertain themselves while the Bride and I dined. It worked pretty well, saved us a lot of money, and generally contributed to family harmony. After a couple of years, and having defused the adversarial aspect of it, the kids suddenly grew bored of "their" food and decided to rejoin us.

There is supposed to be a LTHForum link up on the WGN web site for a bit, though I have not yet found it.

Dickson and Cathy did a fantastic job tonight on Chicago Tonight with Carol Marin. Way to go! For those who missed it, it will be broadcast again at 1:00 A.M. and 4:30 A.M. I think it's also available on Comcast On Demand.

My daughter called us from a friend's house where she was supposedly doing homework to tell us to turn the television to Channel 11. She was pleased to tell her friend that she has shared meals at LTH events with both dicksond and Cathy2.

I'm sorry to say we only caught the last minute or two of the show.

I don't know for sure. The show's website posts audio archive segments, but I'm not sure if they do it for every single segment. If someone has the ability and wherewithal to record it, that would be terrific.

The Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance and its inaugural event -- with our own Cathy2 as one of its driving forces -- got a nice mention from food editor Janet Rausa Fuller in today's Chicago Sun-Times. LTH contributor Peter Engler also gets a mention in the piece:

[Bruce] Kraig heads up the newly formed Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance, a group modeled after the Southern Foodways Alliance whose aim is to celebrate and study Midwestern food, "everything about food and food practices and the cultures from which foods come," he says.

The topic of the group's first meeting: Midwestern sausage traditions. It's a hefty topic dating back to World War I.

    . . . . .

As for the mother-in-law, Peter Engler, a Hyde Park geneticist whose hobby is delving into the history of South Side culinary oddities, says its roots may be in the Depression era, when street cart vendors hawking hot dogs and tamales were a common sight. Engler also will speak at the meeting.

Sausages on menu for foodies' alliance meeting

Also, the Daily Herald's food editor, Deborah Pankey, led off her column today with a mention of this event:

On Saturday, the new Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance will bite into the curious and delicious story of sausage at its inaugural public event: "Stuffed: A Journey of Midwestern Sausage Traditions."

The symposium, jointly sponsored by Vienna Beef Company and Oxford University Press, will bring together sausage producers, scholars and aficionados to ruminate on cased meats' role in building cultural identities, commerce and cuisines.

Symposium will help you learn about the link

I can't hear "fish tacos" without feeling a mournful pang for the long-gone-and-probably-never-returning Tacos del Pacifico. Gary Wiviott apparently shares this sense of loss, as he explains in Kevin Pang's very excellent piece of fish tacos in today's Tribune.

    A couple of notes from today's food sections . . .

Event stuffed with all things sausage...In this piece, from today's Good Eating section, Robin Mather Jenkins reports on the recent, inaugural event from the Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance: Stuffed: A Journey of Midwestern Sausage Traditions, which was held at Kendall College on September 15. In the piece, LTH'er Peter Engler gets a nice mention. It's also worth mentioning that LTH'er Cathy Lambrecht, who is a member of the GMFA's Founding Board, was a driving force behind the highly successful event.

LTH contributor Leah A. Zeldes has a piece in today's Sun-Times; Beef industry improves with age. In the piece, Ms. Zeldes provides an informative overview of the current state of the beef industry and reports on how technology has been integrated into the production processes.

I don't know how to link to a podcast, but Walking on Air with Betsy and Sal in their episode entitled Cake Talk and Gastro Porn "...chat with foodie superhero "Ronny Suburban" [sic] about food forums and a love of chow." Way to go, Super Ronnie! Can't wait to listen!

...meanwhile, Super Ronnie and his trusty sidekick Lucky ponder the complex problem of lunch during the annual month-long blackout at their favorite hideout, Khan's. Back at the Suburban mansion, Jfred runs a search on the Roncomputer...

[edited to add...] Just had a listen; Ronnie's part does, indeed, start about 20 minutes in - and Ronnie, you did a great job fielding all the non-foodie questions and comments gracefully, making a good primer if you find yourself needing to explain the whole phenomenon to someone on the outside.
