A few months back I received a menu brochure in the mail from Felix Kitchen in Highwood. It's a take-out Chinese food establishment. I haven't seen anything on this forum so I thought I'd get the word out.

I was intrigued by the four coupons attached to the menu brochure - Over $10 get 2 eggroll FREE, Over $15 - Free order of Crab Ragoon, Over $20 - Free order of Chicken Fried Rice, Free order of Orange Chicken with purchase over $30.

I also noted that they have some 26 luncheon entrees that include an egg roll and chicken fried rice for $4.65. The lunch includes a free can of soda pop so with tax it comes to five bucks.

So I decided to give it a try one nice day at lunch. I love noodles and I ordered the shrimp lo mein (no rice). The owner took the order and had two chefs working in back. I took the food over to the Moraine Park and found that the dish was delicious. It was also an extremely large portion.

We've had food delivered for dinner some six or so times since then. All of the dishes that we've order were quite good and very reasonably priced. We've had a couple of "house specials" - the Garlic Delight (shrimp, beef, chicken in a garlic black bean sauce) and Seafood with Lobster Sauce. We've also ordered the Beef Satay, Curry Chicken with Onion (nice and spicy), the Mongolian Beef and the dinner order of the Shrimp Lo Mein. Many of the dishes are available in small orders as well as large ones, so you can sample lots of food.

The only dishes that I had problems with were some of the vegetable dishes. The few that we ordered were quite heavy on the broccoli. Maybe he got a special deal on broccoli that week.

I noted that parts of the menu are in Spanish. The delivery guy tells me that the owner, Felix, is Chinese but spent considerable time in (I seem to recall) Costa Rica.

I suggest that you try his lunch and take it to a park one nice summer day. Make sure that you grab a full menu while you're waiting for your food. I don't have any idea of his deliver area for dinner, but you can always ask.

Felix Kitchen is located at 114 Washington Ave. Highwood, in the same strip mall as Casa del Norte. The phone number is 847-433-8809 or 8891. They're closed on Monday, but opened from 11 am to 9 pm on Tues. - Sat. and 2 pm to 9 pm on Sun.

Anyone else tried his food and have any comments?

    GP Bob

A friend of mine who has been disappointed with the Chinese options in the Highland Park area recently recommended Felix's, so I will have to give it a try.

It got a little love earlier in the thread below.

    Hi,

Felix Kitchen is in my area. They have a nice lunch special of main course, chicken fried rice, eggroll and pop for $4.65 plus tax. We collect our meal then go to Moraine Park on Sheridan Road in Highland Park to eat.

My friend Helen wrote the earlier report on Felix Kitchen. It was at her recommendation recently we lunch on Beef (and) Brocolli:

General Tao's Chicken (I was wrong. Corrected from Kung Pao)

The eggroll wasn't entirely cabbage, it was a bit better than most:

The large apartment complex just north of Felix is little Mexico. The two other take-out Chinese restaurants I have visited all have Spanish on their menus. For the immediate area it is a reasonable for their neighborhood. The quantities are also pretty substantial for the price point.

    Regards,

Odd... that Kung Pao looks a lot like General Tso's chicken what with the breaded, fried pieces, sweet corn-starchy looking sauce and lack of peanut. Then again, I have seen stranger.

I guess that I had another senior moment when I started this thread on Felix's Chinese place. I hadn't realized that I had posted something last May on another thread. Those of you who I'll be meeting at Isaac's restaurant this Sunday will be able to chide me about it in person so don't bother wasting any electrons on this thread.

It was my feeling it might be General Tao's (spelling from Felix Kitchen menu), too. My friend just reconfirmed you were right.

I will now edit in a correction from Kung Pao to General Tao.

My new route to work on Thursday takes me up Green Bay to Sheridan to Old Elm Road. This passes the mall that Felix is in so today I picked up lunch and brought it to work. I had Mongolian beef with green onions only;spicy, and pot stickers.

Pretty tasty for takeout Chinese. The beef was tender without the papain induced sliminess prevalent in so many cheap places. There's a decent amount of dried chilies in the sauce which liven up the fairly sweet sauce.

Pot stickers were tasty, not too doughy and the pork filling had some flavor. The dipping sauce had a good ginger hit. All in all, a place I will eat at again when I want a quick Chinese fix in the area.
I used to think the brain was the most important part of the body. Then I realized who was telling me that.
