While I would no longer call it "great", Jay's Beef is right there, isn't it? It can be hit or miss these days, but when they're on, the beef is very good.

Since I just mentioned it in another thread, I thought I'd try the Google Maps trick.

Google Maps search of places near Montrose & Narragansett

Jay's is right there. Hagen's is pretty close; Old Warsaw is just a little further.

Again, the strategy for this is only slightly obtuse: seach Google Maps for "montrose & narragansett, Chicago, IL". When the results come up, click on the green arrow marking the intersection. In the balloon that appears, click "search nearby" and enter "site:lthforum.com" in the box. You get the link above.

Hope it helps. Again, if people include clear complete addresses when they post about restaurants, it should just improve results...

I've had really good luck at Jays lately. It went through a pretty bad period but the last 3 times I've been there have been very good.

Hagens, well you just can't go wrong there. But plan on eating in your car.

Unfortunately, I kind of like salt. But my wife is known to complain about things being too salty that I don't find salty at all. I've brought her to Jays twice and she hasn't complained about it.

At the intersection of Montrose and Narragansett, within walking distance are only three possibilities. Eat at McD- on the northwest corner. Walk a bit further north for longtime and sometime legendary beef.

The southeast corner has a hotdog stand called Orvilles's that has the typical extensive Greek fast food menu and does most of it with competence. They have various model airplanes hanging from the ceiling for your amusement.

Hagen's is such a cool place, I want to love it-but the last time I got some fried shrimp from them they were miserable. Soups are so-so. From now on it's smoked fish and their jarred herring.
    I love animals...they're delicious!

Went to Hagens a couple of weeks ago on Friday around 4:00. Needless to say it was very crowded but the line moved surprisingly fast. I ordered a couple of pounds of the Lake Perch breaded and ready for frying. Also got a qt. of the Clam Chowder which they gave to me cold as they knew I would be eating it later that evening.

We thought the Clam Chowder was very good.
It had been a long time since I have had fresh Lake Perch and it was excellent ( this is the extent to which I am able to describe food. As a result I don't post very often). I quickly fried the fillets in oil and 3 of us including my 78 year old mother-in-law polished them off along with a plate of potato pancakes.

Great store, great people and a great meal!

Also I go to Utopia Cigar Store at Montrose and Narragansett every couple of weeks and never nioticed Jay's. Only have one cigar left so I will be trying Jay's this week.

While driving up Narragansett at Belmont, I noticed a place called #2 Couscous. They had a Grand Opening Banner up but it looked closed down.

Anyone know if its still in business?
