I noticed a sign for another new place on Harrison Street in Oak Park - Briejo.
The only info I could find is an "under construction" website: briejo.com

It has a big 'ole "Closed For Remodeling" script on its signboard.

Cy hasn't had to much luck on Milwaukee Ave with Cy's Steak House closing and now this.

I tried to go to Andersonville's Col-Ubas Steak House tonight before - as I'd read - it was supposed to close in November. But te door was locked and the windows were papered over, so apparently it didn't make it to November. Luckily, Turkish Cuisine was nearby, so the evening was saved.

Local cowboys and cowgirls take note.

Darwins on Damen seems to be evolving into "Whiskey Road", complete with a Yeeee Hawww! western-style wooden sign. All they'll need is a wagon wheel and big steer skull above the bar.

I saw a brand-new Vietnamese resto near Miner/Graceland in Des Plaines - their motto "east meets west cuisine" certainly made me raise an eyebrow.

Anyone been inside yet?

Closing: the original Noodles, Etc. location in Hyde Park. (1509 E. 53rd).

Closing: Far East Kitchen in Hyde Park (1598 E. 53rd).

Opening: Chant, Asian lounge, by the people from Noodles Etc., in the old Far East Kitchen space. Supposedly opened this week.

Mr. B-wiches and I stopped in there a little over a week ago, out of sheer curiosity. The name and "rustic" looking signage gives no indication of the new place's character--which atmosphere wise is more a return to the Darwin's of yore before the last owners tried to make it a striped shirt-wearers paradise.

Lots of good beers on tap including a new favorite of mine, Left Hand's milk stout. Good selection of whiskies, bourbons, as one would hope from the name.

The food will be much simpler, without a trace of the gastropubbishness that seems a requisite for all new bars nowadays--burgers, fries, and that's pretty much it. We didn't get any food but we'll be back soon and report back accordingly.

The new owner is an affable guy who really wants to make this place a calm, low key, casual neighborhood type of place. No sceneyness or frattiness, unlike many other recently opened Bucktown/WP establishments.

He put up a big screen in the back of the bar for noble pursuits such as Guitar Hero and themed movie nights.

Though we don't tend to "bar" much these days, Whiskey Road is now on our short list of places to hit up when the urge strikes us.

Note that at Whiskey Road they had a sign up recently saying Cash Only. Not sure if that was a one time thing, but there's a few places up at the corner of Armitage and Damen to get cash, should you want to just in case. The cash station in the 7-11 seems to not do charges for our card, not sure if that's everyone's or just our bank.

According to the sign in the window, Con Sabor Cubano is coming soon to 2739 W. Lawrence, and it claims to be featuring "authentic Cuban steak sandwiches."

True- Whiskey Road is cash only and the owner says he is going to try to keep it that way. There's an ATM in the bar-- look for the giant glowing green dollar sign--or there's a MidAmerica bank at the corner of Armitage/Damen.

I don't get it. "keep it that way" in that it's some sort of philosophical thing ? ie "I'm keeping it real by only taking cash" ? I don't think I've ever seen a bar that didn't take credit cards. I dunno, maybe a dump like the Gold Star doesn't but I've never checkd. He's basically telling people that they can't open a tab, which means people won't spend money as freely in his bar.. Which means it will probably go out of business faster than Darwin's. Whatta ya bet that the ATM in there charges like $2.00 in fees and he gets a cut ? Just admit it and say you don't want to pay the fees.

I didn't inquire as to what his rationale was in not taking credit cards. He may very well get a cut of the ATM, and may very well not want to pay the credit card fees. I, personally, didn't think it was that big a deal--I generally prefer to have cash on me rather than use my credit card if I'm out at a bar, but I suppose I may be in the minority.

I encourage you to drop by the place sometime and ask these questions for yourself--I sort of thought the credit cards thing was a non-issue, myself, so didn't bother asking what his rationale was.

Honestly, in that neighborhood Whiskey River is going to have a hard time not taking credit cards...and as a bartender I can attest that people spend way more money if they can open a tab on a card than if they have to stay within cash limits, even if there's an ATM right there.

But I'm definitely curious to check it out, especially if it's more like the "old" Darwin's.

The windows are papered over at Marrakesh Expresso on Damen.

He's supposed to be the chef at Alhambra these days. Who knows what's going on there.

It wasn't a regular stop for me, but it had all of the proper Italian deli attributes and supplies and the quality of the things I got there was quite good. With Joseph's on Irving Park threatening to close for over a year now, I feel the sources for my version of soul food are dwindling.

They have relocated to the Oak Mill Center at 7900 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Niles. I imagine they paired down their offerings -- it's a much smaller space. (I only drove by the original.)

A week ago, the bar area at Osteria via Stato became its own entity, Pizzeria via Stato, which apparently will be featuring exclusively "Roman-style thin crust pizzas featuring artisanal ingredients." Osteria via Stato continues to occupy the main dining room.

This reminds me that when I was in the Bloomingdale's building this week, next to Tucci Benucch there was some construction behind some boarding that announced an affiliated pizzeria of some sort to come. Guess LEYE is all about the pizza these days.

Does anyone know what is going on with La Mora in Roscoe Village?
It has been closed for over a week with no explanation. Hoping for an interesting replacement.

La Mora looks to be Game Over. Man, would a Pequod's kill in that location or what?!?!?
