Has anyone had Pequod's recently? It's been awhile for me and am thinking of picking some up. I seem to remember their sausage being really herby but still tasty, but can't recall crust texture.

    Any comments? Criticisms?

I've mentioned this before, but for me, there is no better chicago-style than Pequod's on Clyborne/Webster. It's my understanding that the suburban locale is the original, so I'm assuming both do things the same way.

The crust is what really shines at Pequod's - there is a layer of crisp, carmelized cheese on the outside of the high-rise crust. It really is one of those small pieces of culinary perfection when done right (and it usually is). Very simple, but on the Chicago-style deep-dish pizza scene, it's unique and elevates this pizza to king of the crust wars before even talking about the other elements. And the other elements work well for me.

Deep and heavy slices, but the crust is lithe on the bottom with a real cheese and fresh-ingredient filling topped by a sweet tomato sauce. No bland or doughy or crusty bites on this pizza anywhere.

I will say there is a defintie benefit of ordering the medium chicago-style. The pans are old and well-seasoned with the medium pan a bit taller and creats a perfectly sized piece imo. The large has been much more hit or miss (not tall enough, too heavy) for me, so I always order medium(s) regardless of how many people we are dining with. Also, almost goes without saying, you really have to eat-in with a Chicago-style.

Throw in the friendly waitstaff and the White Sox-slant in the midst of cub-dumb, and you have my favorite pizza joint in the city.

I'm a big fan of pequod's as well, both the pan and deep dish styles. The caramelized cheese is the kicker, but the good crust, spicy, fresh, generous sauce, and great toppings make it a real winner.

I'm barely within the delivery range for the clybourn/webster location (they don't deliver west of kedzie, i'm 1/2 block east), so it's my standard go-to place for pizza. I'm not a big fan of their thin -- I think it doesn't translate as well -- and so for thin I grab pizza from piece or santullo's in wicker park.

What's the address of the MG location or Pequod's? I'll bet that one is closer to my house than the one on Clybourn

I've been to Pequod's (Clybourn location) just once and I didn't like it at all. The crust was just plain burnt and the toppings were bland. Also, our server was not particularly friendly and I didn't dig the obnoxious atmosphere.

    The real "story" of Pequod's....

I do not know this as fact, but it was related to me by a life-long resident of Morton Groove.

I, too, loved Pequod's/Clybourn. We lived around the corner on Greenview when they opened we became frequent fliers. We ate there often, both in-store and carry/delivery; as four guys living together we had an unrelenting need of pizza and beer.

When I moved up north, out of their delivery zone, they still delivered since we had been good custies. I thought they were sliding somewhat, then I moved to the 'burbs so the point was moot. My wife surprised me last year with a trip to the '"original Pequod's" in MG (and the old-man's-bar on the corner) and it was everything the Clybourn Pequod's EVER was. With bigger hunks of tastier sausage.

The real poop (as told to me):
The guy who started it all (Ahab?) got back into the business after selling the original Pequod's. His pizza place is now located around the block from the Morton Groove restaurant. The pizza is supposed to be transcendental, especially to the Pequod's lover. It looks like a bar (which it may well be!)- I have driven by it but never been in.

I don't remember the name of it, but you will know it by the whale in the window...
