Thanks to LTH, I have "discovered" Peoria Packing and Sahar Meat Market. While Sahar had a nice selection of lamb, I'd like to find a place that would be to lamb what Peoria Packing is to pork, beef, and chicken.

    Any recs? TIA!

I don't know what it's called, but I get excellent, comparatively very inexpensive lamb from the Lebanese butcher shop on Kedzie, one or two store fronts north of Semiramis.

We also go up to Kedzie for lamb, to City Noor meats or Sahar, or else get lamb at Nea Agora on Taylor. But I think a place that might be the "Peoria Packing of lamb" would be Chiappetti in Bridgeport. Perhaps someone who has been there can confirm this?

    K.,

FrankP mentioned Sahar but that didn't seem to satisfy him for some reason. I am very fond of Sahar II...
    http://lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?p=45637#45637
... as well as of City Noor and Al Khayam's butcher counter is good too. Guts-n-such are available at those places and Sahar has an especially delectable set of offal on offer. But perhaps FrankP is looking for some of the abattoir-atmosphere of Peoria. For lamb, I know of no place that similarly delights the eye with gore as Peoria does with the miasmal pork parts.

But Frank, for great lamb, try my neighbourhood place: Nea Agora, on Taylor Street, north side of the street, just east of Al's. Excellent lamb but no 'eye candy'.

    :P

the place I'm thinking of is not Sahar - it's a couple of blocks south of there, and it does have a fairly decent quotient of gore, especially if you ask to be taken into the back where whole, bloody carcasses hang from the rafters. It's an unattached storefront literally one or 2 storefronts N of semiramis

Right. I know the place you mean. I haven't ever been in there but have looked in and noticed their posted prices were quite good. When I peeked in, though, I saw no gore.

Thanks for your replys to my inquiry. I liked the Sahar Meat Market, and bought some beautiful lamb shanks there this weekend. After seeing Peoria Packing, I was interested to know if a similiar place existed where lamb was sold wholesale and retail. Sounds like Chiapetti is the answer. Since the Lawrence Oasis is just west of me, it's convenient, but I will certainly check out the other places mentioned and report back.

    Frank,

You're welcome and sorry for my silly 'gore' jokes -- at least I left the Clintons and Bushes out of it. Chiappetti is a very old and well respected supplier in Chicago and, in fact, they supply lamb (and veal) to some of the better retail shops (and restaurants) around town that we visit.

I beleive the stand alone butcher shop on the semirami side of the street is named simply "lebanese meat market".

No gore or anything in the front room -- just a counter. But indeed prices did look good when we took our stroll after semirami's last week (around 2.50/lb for lamb shoulder).

Well, I'm not surprised. I had mentioned some time ago that they were not carrying certain items that I had formerly regularly purchased there and I definitely had the suspicion that the meat side of the business was on the way out as the restaurant absorbed more of the family's time and energy. It was for that reason that I had started to go to Sahar II (e.g., for maghrebbi sausages). It sounds, though, as if they've kept the shop going, but without the meat, what is the drawing card?

We haven't been to Waaha 'l Aurans (the oasis around Lawrence and Kedzie) in a while and need to get back. One thing I've been wondering is how their restaurant is doing. I hope all is well there.

My boyfriend is on the Elimination Diet, AKA, The Cave Man Diet.

The only protein he's allowed to eat is lamb. I bought nearly everything they had available at Jewel (which was very little).

Do you know a good place to buy affordable ground lamb or lamb chops?

    TIA.

I'm on the border of Uptown and Andersonville.

I have access to a car.

I typically shop at the Jewel on Broadway and Berwyn or the Trader Joe's on Lincoln.

There are a dozen places along Devon that carry lamb At the east end of Devon is the Devon Market, which usually has legs of lamb and chops. I am pretty sure they will grind some for you. Noor Meat market is always a good source for lamb, but there are many other markets in the immediate area that also carry it. City Fresh at Kedzie and Devon is a great Balkan and Eastern European store with a very good meat counter. I have bought some excellent lamb chops there (the beef is good there also).

I get all my lamb at a very good, moderately priced Lebanese butcher on Kedzie, just north of Wilson. I don't know what the place is called, but it's in a standalone building a couple of doors north of Semiramis, on the east side of the street.

Yeah, there are a bunch of good sources for lamb in that area also. I think the Lebanese meat market you are referring to is actually called "Lebanese Meat Market".

In addition to d4v3's suggestions found on Devon, my go-to place for lamb is Farm City Meat. It's always packed here (don't forget to get a numbered ticket) so the turnover rate is presumably high.

    Why, yes.
Blue Ribbon Meats on Austin carries Chiappetti lamb. So does Whole Foods, but it's cheaper at Blue Ribbon. We bought a beautiful leg of lamb there a few weeks back. It was a tad bigger than we'd hoped, so the butcher at Blue Ribbon suggested cutting a few steaks off the top. It was the perfect solution and the lamb was delicious.
It does not look entirely promising from the outside (or maybe on the inside either), but they know their meat and are more than happy to talk about it. If you are looking for something specific, I recommend calling first.

Treasure Island (on Broadway between Belmont and Addison) also always has a good selection of lamb, including ground lamb.

While we lived in Uptown - that was our regular go-to place for lamb. The butcher there has always been helpful and gone out of his way to assist us.

    LTH,

Any proven Southside spots for affordable lamb? I'm looking for a reasonably priced leg of lamb for some mock-birria (not goat that is, although I've heard "birria" just references cooking-style). Anyways, thanks for any input.

I have used T&J Meats in Chicago Heights and they have had good prices on lamb and nice quality too. Of course I was also buying 30 lbs of it at the time.
If it's not moving it must be food
