When I was there last summer, there was a bunch of BBQ being sold right in the street. I had just had lunch before discovering this, so I didn't partake, but it sure looked and smelled good!

I lived in Asheville '03 to '06 and it's an awesome little city in the most beautiful mountains.

As for BBQ, there are a few joints here and there, but 12 Bones seems to be the "top spot" in town. The other favorite is Ed Boudreaux's which is centrally located downtown.

You can also check out Mountain Xpress which is the free weekly there. They have a pretty good dining guide.

    Have fun!

Homer: Are you saying you're never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon? Ham? Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal.
Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

Asheville is not really in the BBQ zones of Carolina (tomato - in the piedmont, vinegar near the coast, mustard toward the south). I have not eaten in any of the spots mentioned, so I can't speak to their quality, although they seem fairly upscale. The culinary treat in Western Carolina is mountain trout. I doubt that you will find anything like Lexington BBQ or Allen's in Asheville.

Asheville is a lovely small city: go to the Biltmore House and the crafts shops in the area (Blue Spiral, for one) or the shop of the Southern Mountains Crafts Council.

yes, GAF is right about that, the mountain trout is friggin' awesome. Seek out Sunburst, they are the best. The trout filets are bright orange, like salmon. Sooooo good, and definitely makes me pine for those mountains.

I had the mountain trout here back in September of 2006 - http://www.thelobstertrap.biz/ It looks like they've changed the flavors a bit - the version I had was with hazelnuts and rosemary and was excellent. It's a little pricy but service was good and we enjoyed the live music and lively atmosphere. We also had a very nice lunch here - http://www.tupelohoneycafe.com/about.htm
    Enjoy your trip! Lynn
