Sometime after New Year's I would like to try a seafood expedition.I mentioned elsewhere I am a novice except for shrimp.I have started searching on my own.I started with Oceanique which according to the sample menu is out of my price range.Davis Street Fish Market looks interesting but I did not see prices.I am looking for preferably no more than $15.00 pp although that might be unrealistic?Help please.TIA.

Davis St. would be a great place to start. The prices are in your range and it's a pretty casual and friendly environment.

Just over the border in that southern suburb of Evanston - name sounds like Shica or something like that - is a Mexican Seafood place that's pretty good and well within your price range. It's La Cazuela Mariscos,

One Asian option that I thought was good, also in your price range, although I think I saw a post somewhere saying it had gone downhill a bit (but just one person's opinion):

Tat place (blanking on the name) is right across the alley from Popeyes and I've never seen a cop in there. I find them at the Mark II or the Keg more often than not. Oh, and at the Lamp Post at Touhy and Ridge, but parking stinks there.

As for seafood, Sea Ranch just opened on Dempster by the dry cleaners and the Starbucks E of Chicago. Their Lake st location is fantastic, I have not been yet but cant wait to try it.

And after actually READING  your post, I see you weren't talking about a place where cops like to hang hout but rather an actual police substation. There is inded one right across the street from the aforementioned but unnamed bar.

All the posts I come home to!I am sure it is mentioned on LTH somewhere but is the other Sea Ranch near Edens Plaza?I am usually at the Borders that way every weekend although the Evanston one is closer. But when I go out I rarely seem to spend time nearby.Should get back to supporting the local businesses. Thanks again all.

Its on the S side of Lake St across from Borders. There is a Sea Ranch Restaurant on the side facing the street and the takeaway place is on the side facing west.

Not really, plus I'm on this stupid low fat diet so its pretty much a moot point for now. I've been going for quality over quantity.

I've been making braised tofu with black mushrooms, very yummy

Speaking of fish, the ceviche at La Cazuela is indeed really good, but I absolutely love the shrimp ceviche at Supermercado Morelia across the street from Capn'n Nemos, its only 6/lb and with a couple tostadas and a nice avocado, I can eat like a king.

    Octarine,

As we're on the same page with La Cazuela, I best get over to Morelia to try their ceviche.

I've got half a pound of the shrimp ceviche in my fridge. The low fat diet is hard but I am finding Good Chow in spite of it. I just have to be skimpy with the avocado.

I haven't been in many years, but "My Place For" on north Clark was a Greek restaurant specializing in seafood. It was reasonably priced and the seafood was good.

It's now called the Gateway Bar & Grill. Anyone with recent experiences there?

I tried it a week or two ago. Quick impressions:

Bright and clean, with an eat-in area for the sushi bar.

Raw seafood looked very high quality, was expensive, limited selection.

    A little prepared food.

A smattering of mostly Japanese grocery-type ingredients and a few cookbooks.

I wanted to like it more than I did, since it's walking distance for me. For now I'll stick to the Burhops in No Man's Land if I need better-than-supermarket quality seafood.

I bought some Sea Bass at the Dempster store on the day after opening. It was pristinly fresh and enjoyable. I also thought the price was a little high at $18/lb, but I just bought the same fish at Dirk's (also very great quality) at $20/lb.

I may be stating the obvious on this list, but any Chinese restaurant that caters to Chinese customers has two menus--one for the non-Asians and one for the Asians. Silver Seafood is no exception. If you go to Silver Seafood (and I highly recommend it) make sure you get the Chinese menu.

You may have to wander up to the host stand and take one yourself (that's how I got it) but it is worth it. For an appetizer try their fried pork stomach, if you can *cough* stomach such things. Delicious.

When all is said and done though, the best seafood your going to get in Chicago is my seafood curry. Availability is limited however.

I'd like to revive this thread since it's so old and Mr. Pie and I are having a heck of a time finding a place that specializes in seafood that is also in the $15 price range. We ended up at a neighborhood place that I like because of a particular drunken waitress and the fish made me want to cry. Are there any closer to our neck of the woods (Northwest 'burbs and city)?

At some point I will get to La Cazuela - those photos look marvelous!

    HI,

IF I only wanted to spend $15 per person, then either go to a Chinese buffet with all you can eat snow crab legs or go to a shrimp shack type place:

    Hagen's Fish Market
    5635 W. Montrose
    773-283-1944
    http://www.hagensfishmarket.com
    Hours: M-Th 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; Fr and Sat 8 a.m.-midnight; Sun noon-8 p.m

Hagen's is close enough for you to dine at home or at a park.

    Calumet Fisheries, Inc.
    3259 East 95th St
    773-993-9855
    open everyday until 9:45pm

I like standing outside eating and watching the river traffic. If you are lucky, the bridge might go up for maximum entertainment or they are unloading their smoker.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Although it has gone up in price this year, Glenn's early-bird special is still only $13.95. IIRC it includes a 1/2 lb. portion of fish (choice of several), potatoes , vegetable, soup and salad. It runs from 11am-6pm. For fried fish, I highly reccomend the Fish-Keg, not only for their skill with a fryer, but for their selection also (and they have hush puppies). The problem is there is only a parking lot to eat in. On a nice day you could head east about a mile to the lake, or several blocks north to a park in Evanston.
