The MIL, newly nested in Oak Park, wanted us to come over tonight and order pizza. I looked through my restaurant.com certificates, and found one for Tony’s Pizzeria & Deli in Elmwood Park. Dine-in only. But seemed worth it to save 10 bucks.

This is one of those neighborhood places that wants to please everyone. Burgers, wraps, “grinders,” soft-serve ice cream, pizza. Add a gyros spit and some fried chicken and they’d have it all. We stuck with pizza. They describe it as “New York Style Thin Crust.” I’ve never had a pizza in New York, but I will say that although the crust was quite thin, with some crunch to it, it was neither a cracker crust nor foldable so, much as I liked it, I’m not going to offer it up to the loveable lunatics out there.

Bill and his Mother had a perfectly adequate pepperoni, mushroom, black olive. Nice crust. Not too much sauce. Not an excessive amount of cheese. Fresh mushrooms. I’d be happy to make it my regular delivery pizza.

    I had the much-better-than-adequate Tony’s White Pizza
Image Mozzarella and feta, tomato, spinach, lots of garlic, a little olive oil. Excellent.

The current owners came in last September. Mom, dad, daughter. They’ve got a stack of board games you can play while you wait for your pizza. Obviously trying hard. As that strip yuppies itself along (they’re right next door to Massa), I don’t know if they’ll find a niche. But in the meantime, give the pizza a try.

    Tony’s Pizzeria & Deli
    7428 W. North Ave
    Elmwood Park, IL
    708 452 0600.

Is this place still around and decent? Thanks for the original post, Ann.

I've been there 43 years....and yuppy is one word that I would NOT use to describe Elmwood Park

As far as Tony's, I vaguely remember the place, I live right down the block from that strip and if I recall correctly, Tony's was in the location that has had about 5-6 restaurants die there. That location's latest victim was a Mexican place (not the Cuban place next door, that is stilll thriving)

Something about that storefront, it must be haunted. Its "original" tenant was Gerri's Deli.

In answer to Head's Red BBQ's question above about whether Jim and Pete's Pizza is still around, the answer is YES. They are around 7800 North Avenue. And they still turn out a terrific thin crust pizza, among other goodies, after being around the neighborhood for fifty years.
